View Full Version : Mystery of the partially playable DVD9

In brief, here is the problem:
I copied a 6-1.2 GB movie from the hard drive to a Verbatim dual layer -r DVD.
The DVD9 has the same files and the same size as the hard drive files.
When I play it in the DVD player, it can only play part of the movie. It is behaving just like when you make a DVD9 to 2-discs copy. When you do that, you get the first 20 minutes of the film on one disc, along with the special features. On the second disc you get the rest of the movie.
So my DVD9 copy is only playing the first several chapters of the movie, and it can't access or play the special features or the middle-to-end of the movie.
I don't understand this. Please note: Yes, it copied. Yes it plays. It just doesn't play the whole thing. And if you look at the files on the DVD9 disc, the whole thing is there -- it's the same size as the original.
Thanks for any information on this. :thanks:
What software did you use to burn the DVD? Where did you put the layer break?

Hi!Verbatim dual layer -r DVDIf this was not a typo, it is strongly suggested that you use ONLY Verbatim DL DVD+R media (NOT -R) for DL burning - and use (freeware) IMGBurn to select a good layer break and burn...

The software I used is MagicDVD copier.
The layer break concept is new to me. I just follow the menus on the MagicDVD software to copy the DVD, and I haven't noticed anything about choosing layer break.
I also did not know that using +R was better. I have always used -R media so that the DVD can play in anyone's DVD player, even if it is very old. My understanding is that some DVD players (old ones) cannot read +R media.
Thanks.

Swap to Verbatim +R DLs (even ancient players seem to read them). Use ImgBurn (www.imgburn.com) to burn and remember to set the booktype to DVD-ROM.

Okay, thanks for the tip about ImgBurn, which I had never heard of. I downloaded it. I don't have any Verbatim +R DL discs right now. I did have 1 remaining DL -R, which I tried, and got the "power calibration area is full" error.
But I'm optimistic and will post a report when I try ImgBurn with the Verbatime dual layer +R disc.
And I was happy to learn about layer breaks -- I'm moving forward in the maze.
thanks.

I forgot to ask: where do you set booktype dvd-rom?

IMGBurn>>Tools>>Drive>>Set Booktype
Pioneer burners do this automatically for DL media. Others will be listed when you've clicked on "Set Booktype".
What brand and model of burner do you have?

Also ImgBurn (www.imgburn.com) will auto set the booktype on LGs and Samsung drives.
