Hello folks,
I keep hearing tons of mixed opinions on this, and this thread shouldn't be any different if it lasts.
We all know that one of the formats adopted on the next-gen discs is, in fact, the H.264/AVC standard. This means that for sure the internal chipset(s), by default, will be able to decode it.
However, this is for video discs, those authored with menus, etc, and quite likely in HD formats.
What about data discs though? I heard that a DvD-R/RW/DL with compressed SD video encoded with AVC such as those from x264 or NeroDigital should play fine in these players as well. After all, there is an AVC decoder built-in right?
I know the PS3 can, but I'm wondering if this is more "standard", or is it more of an "extra feature" such as today's DvD players having the ability to decode JPEG, MP3 or DivX?
The playback of AVC content on data discs should be easier in fact than JPEG, MP3 or DivX since AVC is a necessary standard.
But reading data and playing video are two different things. There's also the matter of AAC audio as well.
What are people's thoughts on this?
