View Full Version : Muxing H.264 into MKV

Fellow forum members,
I've searched for the last three days to find a way to reliably mux my H.264 HD-DVD files into MKV but to no avail.
I've tried GDSmux and MKVtoolnix. GDSmux will accept the rebuilt EVO file from EVOdemux but creates a 0KB mkv file. MKVtoolnix won't accept EVO files.
I've tired loading the demuxed stream (obtained via EVOdemux) into GDSmux and muxing it with the audio track but once again...no dice. MKVtoolnix WILL accept the demuxed stream and will MUX it with the auido track, however the resultant video on playback is all garbage (sound is OK though).
The most success I've had is by loading the EVO file into TSremux, and remuxing the video into .TS format. Then Importing the .TS file into GDSmux and muxing it with the audio into a MKV. The resulting MKV file plays but at the 25fps defualt of GDSmux. Attempting to change the frame rate via remuxing with MKVtoolnix is a fools errand and does not work.
So, finally to my question: Is there a way to play the MKV file @23.976? Using Avisynth perhaps? Or is there another way to change the frame rate?
Thanks in advance.

1. Demux the H264 Video with Evodemux Rename File extension to .264
2. start yamb (mp4box gui) load the .h264 and mux it into mp4
3. Start mkvmerge and load your mp4.
Click on the Video Track to load a Timecode.txt File to get 23.976fps :
To create Timecode .txt File open a text Editor and type in :
# timecode format v1
assume 23.976
4. No you have you remuxed H264 in MKV running clean at 23.976fps
Ofcourse you can use assume 25 for PAL
I use Timecodr Files very often to use PAL Audio on NTSC Video etc.
Should work clean on Mpeg4 AVC from HDDVD and Bluray or TS

Thanks Acrowley.
I tried what you suggested but it was not successful. I still get garbage when I try to play back the MKV file.
I can play back the demuxed (from EVOdemux) h.264 video file using the following graph: File Async -> Sonic HD Demuxer -> Cyberlink H.264/AVC decoder -> Video Renderer.
However, I CANNOT play back the MP4 file created by YAMB 1.60.
I have uploaded a small sample H.264 file for you to test and see if your method works.
http://www.sendspace.com/file/ayqjp9
Specifically I would like to know if you can play the MP4 file created by Yamb and if so, what graph filters are you using AND if you can mux and successfully play this file in an MKV container.
Thanks

For video:
Haali Media Splitter -> Haali Matroska Muxer (I use graphedit, source is EVO, destination is MKV)
For audio:
EVODemux the audio part, transcode (if necessary) to AC3/DTS using eac3to.
Then remux video+audio in mmg.exe and provide the correct timestamp code (from a .txt).

@honai,
I've tried that and it doesn't work for H.264 encoded files. What you suggest is the same as using GDSmux. It only creates a 0KB file. I am using files from the Norbit HD-DVD.
Thanks for the suggestion though.

Can you please provide a link to a sample of the original transport stream off the HD-DVD?

I will upload a small EVO of an H.264 encoded file right off the HD-DVD.

You're right, same problem here. In the tray app you can see that Haali starts parsing the first few seconds, but then stops. Maybe it's some irregularities in the stream?
Strange enough, the file *does* play in MPC using the same Haali splitter.

Yes the Evo sample isnt working with any Method. Seems to be corrupted
But i have it :
Use TsRemux !
1.
-Open the .evo in TsRemux
-select audio and AVC Video
-save it as TS
2. simply remux it to mkv with HaaliMatroskaMuxer (gdsmux)

@Acrowley,
This is exactly what I described in my original post (See paragraph 3).
The problem is, I need to display the video at 23.976FPS not 25FPS. Usually, you can use MKmerge (MKVtoolnix) to do this. However, as I described in my original post, using MKmerge (MKVtoolnix) to adjust the timing screws up the MKV file and it plays back showing garbage.
Thanks for your help though.
PS. By the way, on my computer, TSremux will not mux the audio track at all. Just the video.

Keymaker..
I used exactly this Way like describe above on your EVO Sample, and the remuxed mkv is running clean at 23.976fos without any Error
Also i never had any Problems to mux HDDVD/BluRAy AVC into mkv with the 1st Method (demux-mp4box-mkvmerge)

@Acrowley
OK, I tried a different computer (My Server) and everything appears to work fine with the sample I uploaded.
I will try to do the feature film and report back with my results...

Well I tried the feature film, but GDSmux fails at 0.7% while demuxing.
Maybe GDSmux has some sort of size limitation when trying to mux an AVC file?

No..theres no Restriction in gdsmux
Ive done a lot of AVC with gdsmux

GDSmux fails on both of my computers at 0.7%. One is XP the other is Vista, so I don't think the OS is the culprit. The file size is approximately 17GB.
