for some reason i can only rip dvds now at 2x!!! I have a 16x artec drive and before it was between 5x-8x everytime, which was acceptable.

thanks, but none of that helps.
in win 2000 it only rips at 2x
in win 98 it rips between 6x-9x, the same dvd.
it has to be something to do with a driver/codec etc.

Two things:
1. Ensure you have installed the Intel / Via Drives where needed.
2. Ensure you have UDMA enabled for the device in the IDE controllers section within device manager. (Check the properties of everything under the 'IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers').

you know, it was a DMA problem! Which i am annoyed about as i always check this kind of shit first!
My cd writer isn't DMA but it being reported as working in DMA, while my DVD is DMA and was being reported as PIO MODE!!!! As it doesn't give a device name, i assumed all was normal. All settings are USE DMA IF POSSIBLE. So something must have switched it off!! When i upgraded to the new crack RPC 1 firmware :) (Artec 16x Star 2000) the DMA had returned!!!
thanks.
