Hi, I'm new to encoding dvd's...I used AutoGK to try to encode Alien the director's cut to .avi format. It took about 4 hours to encode it using a Satellite A100 laptop, Intel Centrino duo cpu, 1 gig of RAM, Windows Xp pro. The only problem is that some parts of the movie repeat themselves, otherwise the image and sound quality are great! Has anyone encoutered this problem before? and if so what am I doing wrong?

Thanks for your help

is it a multi-angle dvd?
AGK has problems dealing with those. what you should do is re-author
in dvdshrink and remove the angles you dont want, then encode
that.

Sure enough, at least the "Chestburster" scene.
Alien Quadrilogy: Alien: 1979 Theatrical Version/2003 Director’s Cut

As Tank has suggested, you might try Re-authoring (http://dvdshrink.info/reauthor_basic.php) in Shrink, stripping out the multi-angle scenes that are giving you grief, and then processing those results in AGK. The info on the Alien page I linked to says that there's very little difference in the original Theatrical Version, and the 2003 Director's cut, so that's a judgement call on your part.

By "re-authoring" in Shrink and culling out the angles/audio tracks/etc. that you don't need/want, you can probably get down to a very low, maybe zero compression level in Shrink if you're worried about the quality of your ensuing AGK encode.

Pre-ripping with DVD Decrypter in IFO mode should also solve the problem. I had no issues with the encode on that same disk using that procedure. IFO mode selects only one angle.

And ISO?

ISO Mode should create a disk image on your HDD. So the angles would still be there.

Cheers!

Yes, that's right. However, DVDDecrypter has already started to become dated for lack of updating. DVDFabDecrypter in DVD to DVD > Main Movie mode selects one angle, and may be used.

Men learn by mistake. I had once used AGK on a movie ripped in File mode of DVDDecrypter, and the result was really weird, like Trek17 reports here.

Regards.

DVDDecrypter has already started to become dated for lack of updatingThe ONLY aspect of DVD Decrypter that is "dated" is that it can't "rip" a relatively small number of newer DVD releases contain "ArccOS" or "RipGuard" copy protection by itself (It can and does so, however, when used as part of the "RipIt4Me" package).

All of the many other functions of DVD Decrypter continue to be as wonderfully useful as they have been in the past...
