View Full Version : Demux .wmv advanced profile WMVC1 for Mux in MKV with AC3?

Hello,
I could not find a satisfactory reference to this so please don't hate me for asking. I have a project in the works that is WMV VC1 1080p that I must convert into an MKV container with several AC3 files. So far, I have noticed that mkvtools refuses to accept the format all together. What method, graphedit or AVS? do I need to get a raw video file from the WMV file for muxing with several AC3 files into the MKV format? Thanks!

Try haali's gdsmux, which can handle some formats than mkvmerge can't. I've never tried it with VC-1, however.

That worked. The answer was right under my nose the whole time, thanks!

yes it works..
But the Problem is you will not get your wmv stream back from mkv.
The demuxed WMV from mkvmerge or avimux is a no-go.
At the Moment i wasnt able to find a Way to demux wvc1 from mkv

And I'm OK with that. I have a 650MB sample on the newsgroups with what I did if anyone would like to check it out. Just search the news headers for "1080P ultra edition sample".

-dumpvideo (MPlayer only)
***** Dump raw compressed video stream to ./stream.dump (not very usable).
Yeah, as is the case with a number of formats, you can't just demux VC-1 (using a utils like mkverge (apparently), avi2raw60, or MPLAYER's "-dumpvideo" option), and end up with anything usable, if for no other reason than there are no "dividing lines" between frames. Not to mention critical information needed to use the stream that isn't constantly repeated each frame, even if you did know where to "divide" them.
I "wrote a [not very widely publicized yet] tool that will demux VC-1 streams from an ASF/WMV container - presumably their original source - into a SMPTE standardized, compliant VC-1 elementary "encapsulated" stream ("ES") to solve this problem. The resulting stream should be acceptable by HD-DVD authoring apps, and, unlike a "raw demux", it should also be something that's easy to mux into MPEG TS (which I think was what they had in mind), as well as miscellaneous other containers such as AVI and MKV. I don't know what muxing tools are out there nor, nor am I planning on writing any at this point. But to whatever extent those tools exist or will exist, they will no doubt they should will accept VC1-ES format as their input.
If anyone is interested, an example of an Advanced Profile VC-1 in an AVI container is here (http://www.ftyps.com/unrelated/vc1_in_avi.avi) (25 MB). I made that from a demuxed stream. To my slight surprise, it actually seems to play pretty much "out of the box" on any system I've tried it on, provided, of course, there was AP profile VC-1 codec installed. BTW, it took a few "manual" steps to create that particular AVI file, and I don't I don't currently plan on writing a series of muxing tools. Note that, in particular, my tool won't even "put back" a VC-1 stream into ASF container such as it came out of. It's "demux" only.
On the plus side, it does as an informational tool, on some level, providing the technical scoop (e.g. a breakdown of the various VC-1 frametypes used) that may be useful to some; knowledge which may be difficult to find elsewhere, at least at this early stage in VC-1's existence.
You can read about and download ASF2VC1 here (http://www.ftyps.com/unrelated/asf2vc1/).
I'm very interested in feedback from anyone who uses it - I'd be curious to know what their goal was, and whether this helped them achieve it.

@stegre
I know ASF2VC1 . i use it to get Infos from WVC1 encodes ( Bframes etc)
My Target is to demux (W)VC1 from mkv and get a ASF/WMV compliant Stream to remux it in wmv Container
I have a few WVC1 encodes muxen in mkv to use Flac or EAC3 audio...very nice ,but not nice is that im not able to remux the WVC1 Stream in WMV again later

3 years later ... :o
Is there the same problem with wmv3 or only with wvc1 ?
My aim is to put wmv in MKV for chapters but I would like to eventually recover the wmv stream.

Thanks, but to do what ? To put the wmv in Mkv or to recover the wmv from the Mkv ?
Sorry but I never used ffmpeg.

Many thanks!
It works like a charm, but sometimes it is stuck with the message "Warning: ASF ReplicatedLen of '1' not handled yet; ignoring." and I have to cancel.

Is there any way round it?
My workaround is to use GraphStudio and write in into an mkv container.

It seems to me ASF2VC1 works "100%" only with the ASFs generated through the outdated DMO (so to speak) "interface". I suppose VC-1 ASFs created with Expression Encoder for example, not always will be correctly demuxed by ASF2VC1. I've managed to "re-ASF" :) several VC-1 streams generated via AVS2ASF ( read: wvc1enc ) or MainConcept Reference, and sometimes ASF2VC1 did fail at demuxing them.

Now in 2012.
This will be very useful, the ability to mux or demux wmv or wma to or from a .mkv. Mkvmerge does not support this yet.... i wonder why?
Is it possible to mux wma to .mkv?
Thanks.
Edit:
Ignore that, use Haali DS Mux. Wow, just wow... after u mux it in .mkv.... u can open it in mkvmerge and mux more or split.... :D
