Why does the Audio ripped from DVDs sound so horrible on iPods?

Okay I am a newbie but quickly learned all the tricks of the trade of decrypting and using MeGui.

My question is that why does the audio sound so bad on iPods when ripped from DVDs?.. I have tried everything under the sun. The best I could do is to use foobar and used the equalizer to change the wav file outputted/demuxed from Megui ...

Note that I am not making simple mistakes like transcoding etc... the only lossy step I take is converting the wav to AAC at 128 kbps.

Please dont ask me to do ABX tests because the quality of audio in general is markedly different. e.g the CD rip of the same song as opposed to the music video from a DVD...

What type of AAC?
AFAIK ipods only do AAC-LC, you might be transcoding to AAC-HE

The encoder automatically decides on the mode to use depending on the bitrate or quality mode. You can manually select the encoding mode yourself instead of the encoder automatically doing it for you. This may give you better results! If you're using the Nero CLI encoder, you have to use the -lc command.

Well I am using the LC encoder...

Okay here is what I do...

1. Use DVD Decrypter w/o demux to my hard drive...
2. Use d2v creator from MeGUI to create d2vs.. the step also demuxes all audio tracks...
3 make avisynth files
4. Use megui to create videos.
5. Now I use the demuxed audios (mostly .wav files) and use Quicktime Pro to compress them at 128 kbps...

Actually even if I play these .wav files on iPods without the video they sound bad...

In the audio forums there is a sticky topic where they seem to suggest that the audio is engineered for movie theatres and wont sound so good on normal players/portables...

At any rate.. I wanna know how to make the sound better... BeSweet helps a little but still not as good as compared to audio of the same video available from CDs.

Demux the audio tracks directly from the DVD in DVD Decrypter (IFO Mode, select tracks, demux). Then encode the audio separately and see if you have the same problem. It could be that DGIndex (which is what MeGUI uses to demux and create the d2v files) isn't demuxing correctly.

On the MeGUI front, since I recently downloaded MeGUI, it's changed SO MUCH compared to it's earlier days that it's barely recognisable. But check the settings, especially for the audio. I still just do things manually as I have greater control over what gets encoded and put where. Automating things I've never been comfortable with, since with computers, there's ALWAYS the possibility something goes wrong. :D
