A while ago it was mentioned that in the future, you'd be able to use the segment editor to blank out video in the video manager part of DVDs - is there any further updates on this feature?

Sorry, but no. Not a lot of free time lately. The real job has been demanding most of it.

I know that feeling! Hopefully its still on the to-do list though?

In the meantime, you can use VobBlanker and/or PgcEdit to edit VMGM cells.

It seems clear that hours & hours have been spent on "bitrate distribution" and I wonder if any of that is going to result in features mere mortals are actually able to use and benefit from...?

Have you tried bitrate redistribution? On certain sources the quality boost is quite dramatic. I'd say mere mortals can benefit from that.

I'm not sure that requires any special abilities.

Agree.
The nice thing is that it is now so simple to use that everyone can easily benefit from it. Much simpler than editing VIDEO_TS.VOBs :sly:

Why is it much simpler? What's so special about VIDEO_TS.VOB except its domain that it should be ignored? And why should the stuff there that is most often just crap be exempt from blanking/re-encoding?
Anyway, it appears this is on the to-dos.

Well, what I meant is that doing a redistribution really does not require any special expertise from the user of DVD-RB.
Nothing against editing of VIDEO_TS.VOBs, though.

I'm not against bitrate distribution (in fact, I'm just testing it now), but surely being able to easily remove a few 100mbs or more in some cases of unwanted video would also boost quality?
On another note though, with OPV and bitrate distribution, the calculations are done before segment editing, so do the calculations need to be done again after?

I usually do all the preprocessing (including the VIDEO_TS.VOB) with VobBlanker.
Still, if you do - in OPV or Redist mode - some blanking with the DVD-RB Editor (don't touch the "Item Reduction" slider), you can Save and Exit, fire up RB.Opt and readjust the DVD size to the desired MB size (e.g 4440 MB) using the slider in the Global Settings window => OK => Save Settings.
Then do the ENCODE with DVD-RB.
I didn't fully try it, but I am pretty sure it will work.

Anyway, it appears this is on the to-dos.Yes this to me seems long overdue. I want to be able within RB to blank FBI warnings & "This movie is rated PG" stills & such, and dunno why I have to use another tool to do it.
Didn't mean to sidetrack the discussion on bitrate; I mean, jdobbs can-will-and-should work on what he is interested in--it's his tool he can do what he wants. But...

I agree! DVDRB is pretty much all you ever wanted! The only thing "left" in my opinon, is VMGM support.
I don't know of there is a monster  lurking in the VMGM that we less experienced does not know of, but I don't see how it would be any more complicated then reencoding the rest of the DVD.
Keep it up jdobbs and hope your "real" job cuts you some slack soon :thanks:

I use VOBBlanker a lot for removing unwanted crap like copyright and FBI junk from episode DVDs, plus frequently use it to cut some things from DVDs like old TV titles from UK episode DVDs that have had just a straight copy to DVD from the original master tapes and they haven't bothered to edit anything and have had no problems at all when running the output through DVD-RB after

I've used VobBlanker before--sometimes successfully, sometimes not. It's not that user friendly or easy to use for the casual user who just wants to push a button and make something work and not explore the inner workings of DVD construction. I'll try it again though.
