I have Pioneer DVR 106D firmware 1.08.
I have Windows XP Pro SP2.
I have Nero Burning ROM 5.5.10.56

I burn a DVD video on a DVD-R disc, region 1, in the slowest x1 speed. I can
play this disc on my DVD player fine.

But when I insert this disc back into the same drive, I have "no media".
The drive just does not recognize the media, keep asking to insert media.

I used to be able to do this before. But lately something happened and I am unable to read the burnt media?

What do I do to correct this? Thank you.

I used to be able to burn and read back DVD-R discs in this same system for years. Lately, something happened and it does not let me read back some DVD-R discs.
I test with a DVD-ROM movie and this DVR drive play the movie fine. Is there anyway I can test the system?

Hi!I used to be able to burn and read back DVD-R discs in this same system for years. Lately, something happened and it does not let me read back some DVD-R discs.1) It may be time to try running a DVD/CD cleaning disc on your burner. Maxell makes one that sells for approximately $10US

2) You should upgrade your NERO to at least something in the 6.xxx family. V.5.5.10.56 was one of the earliest versions to properly deal with making DVDs. There have been all sorts of different burnable media that have been created (up to 16x burn speed) since then

3) I'd suggest that you try burning at 2x or 4x

Hi
I also have the pioneer 106
This player can be a bit fussy , have you changed your brand of media lately , as the pioneer only likes certain types. Ridisc
is one of the problem brands that springs to mind , the 106 just kept on spitting them out .
Hope it helps.

Actually, I have tried around 5 different brands of DVD-R media. From expensive TDK & HP blank disc to cheapies. I have alrady tried write at x1, x2, x4. Same results. I have asked my friends to write a DVD-R in his system. I am unable to read it in mine. But this drive can play back DVD-ROM movies fine.

Do you think I have software of hardware problem? From your answers, you seems to think I have hardware DVR-106D drive problem? This is my second Pioneer drives. Is Pioneer DVR internal drive has so much problems? What is better choice and reasonable price?

Your drive is now a few years old. I imagine you have done a lot of work with it .It might be worth trying setarips advice and giving it a good clean.
Have you flashed the drives bios? Only I flashed my 105 bios once and then threw it out, my fault for not checking the right firmware site.

All in all I’ve had two pioneers and I like them .I bought a LG recently to do all the work, and the pioneer is now a slave. To this day it will still spit discs out that I know have media on them I just place them in the Lg and all is well.

I have also burn CD-R both audio and data discs.
I can read the CD-R discs back fine, no problems.

I also upgrade the Nero Burning ROM to 6.6.1.15a.

Also, I disassembled the drive and cleaned everything this morning.

And the end result is? (Can you now read burned DVDs?)

NO, still unable to read DVD-R discs.
Seems the drive can read every kind of discs except DVD-R.

Also, the written DVD-R disc by this drive can be read in other DVD drives.

I also updated the ASPI to v4.71.2

1) Have you (as I previously suggested) tried burning at 2X or 4X

2) Have you tried simply burning and reading DVD+R media instead of DVD-R media?

I have tried 2x, 4x, 6x DVD-R disc. Still cannot read back.
But can play at DVD player and read by other DVD drives.

I tried both DVD video, DVD data (ISO, UDF) on disc, same result.

I do not have DVD+R media.

I think my problem is drive hardware, do you agree?

did you gently clean the laser lens with a q tip, one spec of dust or lint can cause your problem

it did with my nec 3550(it would burn dvd's but then read them as dvd-rw's)

A good idea is to always ensure your disks are perfectly clean before placing them in any drive!

Has your drive had a hard life? like burnt many hundreds of disks and/or played many movies etc from it?

OK. Yes, I make sure the disc surfaces are clean.

Yes, I have disassembled the drive and cleaned inside well.

I would say I burnt around 40 DVD discs and 50 CD-R discs so far.

That's hardly any at all... The other possibility is the stupid IDE cables. On older IDE drives you have to manually select master or slave, on newer IDE drives you should set it to cable select only! I'm not sure whether the 106 is a new drive or an old drive, you can tell the difference as the new ones are a slightly different form factor, same 3.5 inch height but the depth of the drive is slightly shorter.

An incorrect jumper setting can lead to many problems, either not detecting at all or slow detecting at boot, to drive problems like you're having. Have you changed around your hard drives or other drives? IDE can be fussy!

The IDE cables themselves can also cause problems if they've been pinched, kinked or pulled on too hard. I almost threw away a hard drive thinking it was failing, but as a last ditch effort I replaced the cable and it suddenly recovered.

Yes, the IDE master and slave are set at the drive. (not by cable). There is marking on the back of drive to set jumper.

Yes, I have remove all other drives, and try this Pioneer DVR-106D by itself as slave, then, master, then back to slave again. I also swap the IDE cable with another known good computer with working good drives.

All same results.

Sounds like it's time to get a new burner.

Again, Is it that you perform relatively little burning activity, or did you buy this older burner used, rather than new?

I got this Pioneer 106D new from Fry's Electronics.

Relatively speak, we did not burn much discs at this drive.
