Best Encoder

I used DVDx and found it very easy to make a VCD and SVCD. I was amazed at the quality SVCD on the TV through the home DVD.

I would like to keep movies down to 2 CDs so I guess encoding to VCD is the answer.

My query is do all the programs give much the same result when converting to VCD or are some better than others.

Any opinions from experiences?

Some are better than for others, but again it's another 'eye of the beholder' thing. For VCD's I personally think TMPGEnc is the best, but I'm sure some people would argue for the Panasonic encoder... I found it easier to decide when I took two 3/4 minute clips (one with high motion and one with low motion) and test.

I have used a variety of encoders including, but not limited to: bbMPEG, CCE, LSX, Panasonic, TMPEG, and Xing. Of all the encoders I have used, Xing gives very bad results and is rather slow. Panasonic is substantially faster than TMPEG, but gives very fuzzy results, especially on a large screen. TMPEG is very high quality, and very configurable, but extreemly slow. CCE is extreemly fast, very high quality, does correct RGB and YUV correctly, but is not as configurable as TMPEG.

My Solution? TMPEG Setup + VFAPI Frameserving + CCE encoding. I have VCDs which my friends think are DVDs due to their very high quality. I can tell the differnace because I have studied this kind of thing, but it's not a very big deal to me.
