Multi HD/BD Reader / Burner and AACS

Now that we are seeing more and more of the multi format HD-DVD and Blu-ray readers/burners, one question that comes to mind is whether these units will have a "unit key" for the HD-DVD side and one "unit-key" for the Blu-ray side?

What consequences would there be if they had 1 or 2 (or more) keys in terms of de-AACS'ing the files?

Would we have more potential of "discovering keys" since the firmware is more complex to implement, hence "more susceptible" to engineering?

Arnezami, do you think your programs would operate on these units, or do you see a "unified" set of programs for these new multi-format drives?

Hi HanSooloo :)! How are things going with the PS3?

As for your questions. There are several consequences. But I don't think the impact will be very big: essentially you are buying two drives and two discs. So its mostly convenient "logistically".

Regarding AACS keys: currently BD and HD DVD both use the same Processing Key. Im not sure if a drive would make it any easier to find a Processing Key (mainly because a Proc Key is not in the drive itself but in the player). That said: if we're talking about standalone its quite possible that once you "get in" (and if they would start using different Processing Keys for different formats) getting keys for one format probably means you can get the one from the other format aswell. But as said that is not the case right now.

Of course (for standalones) the added complexity could help somewhat into finding stuff easier. Maybe when (at some time) we break HD DVD but not BD yet (eg due to BD+) we can use the stuff in HD DVD as "cribs" to find a way into BD+ (in the mem/code of the player).

As an aside: keep in mind the different "Unit Keys" are encrypted on both sides of the disc. You need the Processing Key + Volume ID to decrypt it. The Processing Key being the important one. And the Processing Key is definitly not on the disc or in the drive.
