View Full Version : Volume....Again

I know this has been addressed in numerous threads and in the faq; I have tried to read all of them but I am still left with a question.

First, the basics. I am converting an MPEG-2 Program Stream, using a capture card. There appears to be no volume control on the capture. According to G-Spot, the audio is MPEG-1 Layer 2. I am converting to an .avi with MP3 CBR audio. The native volume on the .mpg is low, as is the resluting .avi, and I am trying to boost it during conversion. I am not using the advanced (ctrl-f11) settings for audio.

I know about using the AC3 Filter to boost during playback on a computer, but I want to be able to watch on a dvd player. I understand that AutoGK has no native control to boost volume.

What I am unclear about (noob bit starts here) is ffdshow and how to use it. It was mentioned in a few of the threads on volume issues. Is it the same as the AC3 Filter and is used during playback on a pc, or is it one of the programs that if embedded in AutoGK (like vdubmod) that the program itself will use? Or is it a program I would have to run the resulting .avi through to boost volume? I have done some research on it, but I haven't been able to find anything that fully explains it to me.

Any assistance or pointing to details on how to use it would be appreciated.

One final question: If I switched to the full Gordian Knot would that program have controls that would allow me to alter volume during encoding?

You do have an adjustable gain in GordianKnot - you can also extract the audio, convert it to .WAV, normalize it with an external program and remux it before you encode. GordianKnot might be easier (and yields a better quality output than AutoGK).

TY CWR03 for the info on the full Gordian Knot program. I am gonna play with it.

Meanwhile can anyone explain the ffdshow issue asked about in the first post?

ffdshow will have no effect on AutoGK's processing of audio.

While I was hoping for some kind of script or plug-in I could have used during the original encoding, I think I have found the simplest and quickest way to change the volume. I will post it here in case it can help anyone else.

Create the .avi with AutoGK and then take the finished file and open it in VDubMod. Once the file is loaded, go to Video and click on "direct stream copy". Next go to Streams and click on "Stream List". Your audio stream should appear. Right-click your stream and click on full processing. Next, right-click on the stream again and click compression. Choose your compression and click OK. Next right-click on stream again and click on volume. Click on the check-box to activate it, and then you will have to play a bit to increase the volume to your desired sound level (for me it was 350%). Once you do all this you can save the settings under file - "save processing settings" and create a .vcf file; then if you need it again you won't have to go through all the steps, just load the .avi and the saved settings. Finally run the job. It is rather quick as only the audio is being processed.

I hope this helps.

Great tip and thanks for the post. I was searching all over and all I see is AutoGK does not lower the sound level. This is the first useful post for me.

ok I'm agree with you, AutoGK didn't lower the volume. The fact is that volume is too low. Can AutoGK increase the volume? ScubaJoe13 show us the work around but I have to run VirtualDubMod again to increase the volume. It would be nice if AutoGK has the option to increase the volume.

Thanks!
