I'm ripping Blade Runner, but the ac3 volume is very low...too low,
so I'd like to know how to push the volume up, do I have to decode each track in wav augment the volume and then reencode in ac3 ?

thx

ouch ouch ouch. Why touch a perfectly good AC3 track when you can solve the problem by turning a volume knob? Next time you play back go to the ds filter properties of the audio decoder and enably dynamic range compression.. that should help a bit but AC3 tracks should not be re-encoded

Yes, I know it, ur right.
I'm experimenting with SoftEncode to reduce bitrate and its working
very well....(I used it with Pearl Harbor), but it lacks of volume
modification. As I know that ?azid? can detect and modify volume according to db peeks during wav creation, I thought there could be a way to do it for ac3 too...

... use PowerDivX 3.12 player from http://www.powerdivx.com and activate 'Dedynamic' audio filter. It will allow you to boost audio by + 6 dB ....

Sorry for bringing this thread back but I just read that Demone was lowering the bitrate of his AC3 files.

The bitrate is probably already at 384kbps, lowering the bitrate enough to create any space saving significance will also mean quite a big drop in audio quality. I have heard AC3 files encoded with softencode at around 192kbps (2 ch) that sounded worse than mp3!

I can tell u that mantaining the 5+1 channels the minimum bitrate is
224 and I'm using 256.
I can tell u that the quality from 384 to 256 is almost the same, u must listen to the two at the same time and still cant find a NOTICEABLE difference.
In Pearl Harbor I'm gaining 160mb of space.

My previous post was not meant as an attack. As long as you are aware of the trade offs you can do as you whish. But the main purpose of using the original AC3 (DD 5.1) track is to keep the original DVD quality sound. As for the 160 MB savings, you are probably already creating a 2CD rip why not fill up the second CD as well. If you really want to save space you might want to look into using multichannel OGG as a better alternative (I know there are still problems with OGG+divx but hopefully someone will provide a solution soon).

Uh, when you got a decent receiver you'll notice that it supports night mode. Which means the dynamics of the sound will be flat, so everything sounds just as loud. I think this is exaclty what you're looking for.

I know ur post was not an attack :p
The problem is that Pearl Harbor is a BEAST !!!
I'm using 4 CDs and the 160mb less, saved me from the 5th.

4 CDs ? Let me guess .... encoding with EasyDivX or FlaskMPEG ?

Pearl Harbour wil fit very well on 2 CDs in 640 * 256 , 2 pass VBR DivX 4.11 ..... Lame VBR q=3 sound, average bitrate 150 - 160 kbps.

I'm at 576*xxx temporalsmoother + sharpbicubic, 256kbps ac3
and gknot tells me its 88% quality....now I'd like to see ur 2CD version...audio apart.
