View Full Version : Audacity quit working - why?

I've generated several DVD-compliant .WAV files before with Audacity - it worked fine for that. Now, following the exact procedure I used before, it saves only in 44.1 kHz, not the DVD-compliant 48 kHz !
No I haven't touched the program in any way. It's running on the same computer as before. No OpSys upgrades, not even any hardware changes.
Here's what I did:
Project: new stereo track
Audio Track Rate: 48k bits/s
click stereo track (left goes blue)
Generate: Silence
set duration
File: export as WAV
What could have changed?

Audacity Defaults to a Sample Rate of 44.1kHz - it is the "Project Rate" (located in the bottom-left corner) that determines the exported Sample Rate. If you open Audacity, then just import a 48kHz file into it, the Sample Rate will stay at 44100Hz. If you open directly the "Project Rate" will change accordingly. So importing a 48kHz track and just exporting will downsample to 44.1kHz if the Project Rate is on the default 44100Hz.
So - ensure that the "Project Rate" is set to 48000Hz (not the track rate). Changing the track rate actually just shifts the No. samples per second, so a 44.1kHz >> 48kHz would just stretch the audio out (doesn't do any resampling).
Cheers, Arite.

Many thanks, Arite - it works now. Guess I must have goofed when writing down what I did before :-(
