lately, i was interested in finding out if i could find a better way to play my dvds on my computer (not compressed, just straight off the disc or decrypted file). i always used VLC in the past, but i decided to try out media player classic (with CCCP installed) to see if it looked any better. i especially wanted to get better deinterlacing, because i was disappointed with VLC's deinterlacing (i have tried each method, i usually used x though).
it was ok, but i decided to try another way. i created an avs script for the movie, with good IVTCing, a little denoising, and a sharp (lanczos4) resize to my monitors native resolution. i played the script in mpc with the decrypted audio from the mpeg file.... and WOW, that looked much better!
which lead me to want to know, how does ffdshow and/or vlc deal with deinterlacing and resizing, because it is not nearly as good as if i use avisynth filters. is there any ways to change the settings in ffdshow (i know all of the settings in vlc) to make things look better? i ask because it would probably be more convenient to be able to set those settings in ffdshow so i dont have to decrypt, index, and create an avs script for every dvd i want to watch.
if you havent tried the method i have just described, try it and let me know if YOU see a difference. i will never use vlc to watch a dvd again!
