JohnV, I would REALLY like to have a "transparent" profile. If recode could analyze the video and tell me the settings needed to get my video as close to original with good compression thats what I am going for.

It doesnt make sense to transcode DVDs with anything above standard, correct? How much difference do the advanced settings make? My goal would be near transparent quality with significant compression (or else there is no sense) and faster speed of transcoding. Is this realistic yet or do I need to wait awhile?

Transparent profile with 20" display, 50" display or 75" display?
It's just that transparency is so very subjective, and depends on many things.
I think 1-pass constant quality setting would suit for people like you, I hope we will have it in the future.

It can be useful for quality concerned user to enable high profile 8x8, cause it can encode certain type of fine details and textures better.
