Trying to find an older build

Hi all,

First and foremost, if it's not allowed, then my apologies (My head is still done in from having discovered AutoGK was a commercial product, but the world of software legalities still does my head in), and may feel free to remove this thread :)

Anyhow, the request.

I'm after an older build of XviD. Namely the XviD-1.1.0-Beta2-04042005 build. (The latest build doesn't seem to work on my test rig, which is running Win98se. Analysing past encodes, that's the version which had been running without a hitch beforehand)

There's no good reason why current Xvid builds shouldn't work perfectly fine on your system, unless they've totally removed support for 98. What exactly is the problem?

BTW, AutoGK isn't a commercial product the last time I checked!

Multithreading might, in theory, be failing somehow on win98.

Pity the OP didn't detail his problem but I think I know what it is - the latest version of XviD (and some other codecs that claim to work with win98SE) appears to install properly - it's there in the startmenu and you can bring it up and configure it 'n all but it doesn't appear in the codec list in VitualDub versions, and some other programs. This is why I also had to seek out the earlier version XviD-1.1.0-Beta2 to get an appearance in the VDub list.

I finally figured out what was happening - to register a codec properly in '98SE it's not just a matter of adding the appropriate registry keys, it's also necessary to register it in the system.ini file under the [Drivers32] section. XviD-1.1.0-Beta2 does this but the latest version(s, presumably) fails to do so. A look in that file will show all the video and audio codecs properly registered and that will appear in VDub's and some other programs' lists.

For XviD you need to add this line "VIDC.XVID=xvidvfw.dll" so it will appear in the lists. A look at the other items in the list should reveal the pattern to follow for any other codecs that fail to register properly.

I hope this will help other '98SE users get their codecs working.
