re encoding and repairing my old encodes!?

Hi.
I have been encoding and backing up my favorite avi's for long now.
I started with divx low motion, fast motion etc (already long time ago)
but most are xvid. (thats only codec I use)

Today I realize that some of my encodes that are really important to
me are very bad quality compared to what I have and encode today!
Also some of my files are bad quality simply due to inexperience!


Anyway I was wondering if anyone can help me figure out:

1- if there is a way and its possible to re-encode some of these
using some deblocking filters and repair the blocks I got on them.

2- what to use and what to do!? :)

anything on the subject! But I am low skilled on searches in general!

It makes no sense for me to re-encode a given file just to deblock it. That's what playback post-processing filters are for.

Re-encode from your original DVDs or source material and do it right this time.

Actually the only post processing filter that gave me the wanted result was ffdshow spp deblocking.
but it seems that its not possible to use it durring playback or
I have not such powerful pc.

some are captures, some are my dvds that I have in france, at my parents. I live with my wife in middle east for job.
If you are referring to copy protection etc as I seen that moral is done very often on this forum I can assure you that there is no such issue with me.
Were I live there is no original software or dvd sold and all game and dvd are sold for max price of a dollar!
But I am not interested in such material as I don't have time to watch movies or play games.

birdy, if you really wanna do this, you'll have to make sure that ffdshow is decoding your stuff w/ spp deblocking and then use a script like:

DirectShowSource("...\filename.avi")

But I think it's worthless. I would rather live w/ "standard" deblocking than going through the hassle of re-encoding everything from scratch.

I was thinking this is something commune and done often.
Apparently not! :(
I hope some genius out there someday release a kind of
avi enhance software! All those files encoded few years
ago are now not acceptable quality :(

Well, it's likely that re-encoding your bad quality AVIs (even with SPP deblocking) would look a whole lot worse than just using standard deblocking. Do try adjusting the deblocking strength, or maybe adding other deblocking methods via AviSynth while playing.

I think you will be much happier with this result :)

Garbage in, worse garbage out. That's pretty much all there is to it..

If the quality of these videos is that important to you, I absolutely concur with the suggestion by "neuron2:Re-encode from your original DVDs or source material and do it right this time.
