I get this error when I try to open a H264 file in VirtualDubMod.
Please help me, this is driving me insane. :(

Consider using AVIdemux first, since it can handle more formats?
Otherwise, look at:

Amazingly enough, searching for h264 mkv, or forward reference, brings up dozens of answers to the same problem.

Rather than messing around with other programs, is there a simple fix to this error? Can I just install a codec and it'll work?
I've tried AVC2AVI and AVIdemux, neither have worked.

There's no simple fix, it's a raw stream inside a MKV container, which VirtualDubMod can't handle.

Damn. Screw VirtualDubMod then. :(
Can someone please post a few directions for the absolute easiest way to convert a h264 mkv to an xvid avi?
I've searched far and wide for the past two days trying to work out a way, but everything I do always comes up with an error.

If you install the latest Matroska-Splitter-package of haali then you will find a simple command line program called "mkv2vfr.exe" within the "C:\program files\Haali\MatroskaSplitter\" directory. This program can remultiplex a mkv-file containing a H264-video track into an AVI-file. It only multiplexes the video track so that you have to extract the audio track e.g. an AC3-track from the mkv-file using e.g. MKVExtractGUI and then multiplex it into the AVI-file using VirtualDubMod.
I am using this method for quite a while to convert DVB-S2- recording which have been stored either as TS-file or as raw PES-MPEG-files with H264-video-tracks and AC3-audio-tracks into AVI-files. If you know the video/audio delay you are able to produce a synchronous AVI-file.

You can always install MediaCoder or SUPER to totally automate the process if you don't want any sort of bother about it. Although avidemux current svn works just find for all the mkvs I have.
