Blu-ray & Mp4 dump from PC to external HDD to PS3?

Hello all I have a question regarding a PS3 & blu-Ray playback. Currently I am dumping blu-ray movies onto my hard drive & playing them back using Power dvd on Win xp. However a friend of mine has a PS3: would it be possible to dump those blu-ray movies onto an external hard drive & play them back in a PS3? I realize of course a PS3 uses a Linux os so I am not sure how difficult it would be for the PS3 to recognize and playback those dumped blu-ray movies. I have looked over the existing forum to try and find an answer to this query but to no avail. The other question I have is, is anyone trying to put there mp4 videos onto an external HDD & playing those back successfully on a PS3? I understand that one has to format the HDD to FAT32 & use a program if one is using Win xp to get around the 32 GB limitation. Any help would greatly be appreciated.

split the m2ts files into 3.9gb chunks and put it onto a fat32 partition which can be made using paragon partition manager/norton partition magic/linux and I think the ps3 can play the m2ts files. Maybe if you put them into a folder you can chose to play all in that folder so it goes through all of them automatically in order as you play them.

One thing I want to know is what other formats can the ps3 read apart from fat32 and what if the hard drive is formated as UDF if that is possible.

I do not know about the UDF formating. I am only aware of it recognizing FAT32. It looks like it would be to difficult to playback a ripped blu-ray to an external HDD for ps3. I'll probably just stick with making mp4's right now however I can't seem to find a good program for doing this. I tried Mp4converter for the ps3 and here is what it does in 720 x 480 it cuts the sides off the video this is true rather it be played back on my 16 x 9 pc LCD or my 46" lcd via ps3. When I encode the whole movie it can't be played back I have tried using VLC player and Nero showtime; however a small clip plays back with the sides cropped fines using the aboved mention programs & on ps3. Any ideas on this or suggestions would greatly be appeciated.

That only works for m2ts files from MPEG2 encoded movies... unless you know of another method than using a file splitter + VLC output to MPEG PS.

For AVC movies, there is supposedly a method using Red Kawa's FileServer for the PS3 where you host the m2ts file and download it to the PS3. The PS3 will auto-split it without "breaking" the file, but it only works for AVC. I think there is a minimum FW requirement too. Also, I don't know how it will work with files that have a layer switch within them (certainly trips up and crashes VLC).

I can't playback unedited m2ts files on my PC, so I'm trying desperately to get these methods to work on my PS3. The 3.2GHz P4 with 2GB RAM and PureVideo nVidia 7800GS PC just isn't good enough to playback with PowerDVD and VLC crashes!

Is it possible to put the mp4 onto dvd as a data disc so the ps3 would recognize it? I am talking about regular dvd here not blu-ray.
