Just wondering: Are there any AVC transcoders out there?

I mean going from AVC (DVBS2-material) to AVC and not using a encoder but a transcoder.

Something like rejig, dvdshrink, etc. for avc material.

Or are there specific reasons why transcoding avc does not work in theory. (CABAC&Co causing problems?)

There's nothing preventing a transcoder in theory. The principle of a transcoder is: take an encoder, but instead of running motion estimation and mode decision just copy mvs and modes from the input stream. That's not dependent on any specific features of the compression format.

However, I don't know of any AVC transcoders.

The ones that do exist are Hollywood domain as of today. The closest you'll find on the consumer market are next-gen disc author apps that are very expensive and/or for professional use at the moment.

This was the case for MPEG-2 about 10 years ago as well.
