Getting AVC or VC-1 m2ts files to playback on a PS3?

I've made a few BD rips that I'd like to put in a format that the Playstation 3 can play back from either the hard disk drive, USB device, or CD/DVD. The only method I've found only works for the less desireable MPEG2 movies (splitting the m2ts files, running them through VLC and outputting to an MPEG PS container), which I refuse to purchase.

Just copying the contents of the AnyDVD HD output files to DVD doesn't work (I tried this with a Spiderman 3 Bonus Disc (MPEG2) because the entire rip would fit on a DVD without editing. It shows up as a DVD-data disc and you must browse the disc to the BDMV\STREAMS directory to play back the m2ts file (no menus or anything), but the PS3 will only do video playback with no audio. I can try this with a Nine Inch Nails Blu-Ray Sampler too in order to test VC-1 playback, but I don't want to waste a disc now that I know it can't play BDMV rips or the audio from m2ts container files. Even so, that will not tell me how to break up AVC/VC-1 movies into smaller files or tell me what program to demux/remux them with or what container to put them in.

I tried running one of the Spiderman clips through Nero Vision to make "AVCHD" files, but they will not playback on my PS3 either (FW1.51). There is no movie listed when I browse to the STREAM folder. Nero Vision crashes about 80% of the way through the analyzing of Apocalypto and now it won't even start trying to analyze it (it must be trying to resume where it left off). It just crashes instantly, but will pass that just fine for MPEG2 movies I can't test it for VC-1 (requires another expensive plugin).

So here I am with Apocalypto and Pirates of the Caribbean COTBP ready to do something with them so I can watch them on my PS3 and archive the original discs but I don't know what the first step is. Apocalypto will require English subtitles to be ripped too.

I need to get them playable on the PS3 because I can't play them back on my PC (I'm sure many people are in the same situation). No matter what the movie, PowerDVD just chokes on this system as soon as the first scene fades in even though it's 3.2GHz Pentium 4 HT and 2GB system memory w/ 7800GS.

This is really all preparation for backing up my copy of Planet Earth the complete series from BD to DVD9 (one per episode).

Yes nero vision also always crashes for me at about 80% of scanning the files.

There are some other non expensive AVCHD authoring tools, Ulead dvd movie factory is one example.


Edit: sorry I think I was wrong about movie factory, it will do HD on DVD but in mpeg2 only. I don't tink it is doing avc yet. Of course you can do it with the pro apps like scenarist, cinevision, the premiere/encore cs3 pack,... But for low cost apps I think nero is the only one doing it. Others have announced it though...

What audio stream has that Disc ? Maybe it is just a problem with that format and re-encoding the audio (and remuxing the m2ts) would work.. have you tried TSremux ?

In principle m2ts files were included in PS3 to support AVCHD cameras, that record in AVC/H264 + AC3 (or PCM). It is nice to see that it can also playback m2ts with MPEG2 inside. Nevertheless, I thought m2ts support through the XMB was introduced in fw 1.6, so maybe upgrading will help you.

I have used Nero Vision to create AVCHD DVDs and had no problem with some Bluray trailers, except that the audio got always out of sync....

OK, so we're back on this topic because I now need to know how to do this.

anything that can conver the VC1 files to mpeg2? Any new solutions on this front?

Try in this thread... you can mux the files into blu-ray m2ts files, they will play on the PS3.

I have had some success with using Nero Recode to make 720p mp4’s from BD rips. If you go with Nero AVCHD there is no way to reduce it down to 720p so one is stuck with 1080p. In my experience the 720p looks almost as good and takes a lot less time & space. Also as stated here it will many times crash before it finishes. I have posted screen shots of KOH I did @ 720p here http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=127488 then scroll down. This was from a BD-50. By the way some VC 1 files are accepted in Recode while some aren’t. It seems Mpeg-2 BD’s can be accepted in Recode as long as there is a Dolby Digital Source if it only has DTS as with K O H one must extract and remux then render to something else. I did this with KOH using Vegas & some freeware tools. I haven’t tried any of the AVC mp4 BD’s yet but I have a hunch they would be accepted. So far I have done 5 BD’s to mp4 @ 720p either using Recode or Ps3 video 9 which strangely would accept some of the VC1 BD’s that Recode wouldn’t. However I am having problems with Recode with audio out of snyc on regular dvd’ rips and the video getting un-smooth towards the latter 1/3 of the video. Hopefully they have made some improvements in this area on the lest update. Fortunately this didn’t happen on the 720p stuff I did from BD’s.
