A question about general XviD quality improvement in dark scenes

Hi, everyone

I always use XviD for my DVD backups and I noticed that in almost all cases XviD has some sort of problem (mainly blocking) in dark scenes even if rest of the video is easily compressible. Also I noticed that XviD tends to decrease bitrate significantly in such dark scenes.

Increasing overall bitrate does not always help since general quality may already be quite high but dark scenes still suffer.

So, I wonder if there is any possibility to improve XviD quality in these scenes?

Is it good idea to solve the problem by entering a large number into the 'low bitrate scenes improvement' box (e.g. value like 50 - 60 or even more)?

Well, I just read the thread above...and must admit I really have no idea how to put this information into practice. I would really like to improve the quality of dark scenes, but I don't want to get a PhD! :)

Yes, thread above seems to be quite confusing... I need some time to read it and understand. It looks like idea of having x264's analogue of --crf in XviD (i.e. 1-pass encoding only)...
