View Full Version : doom9.net works, doom9.org requires the "www." subdomain...

Please add a DNS entry for doom9.org instead of only www.doom9.org. doom9.net has an entry both with and without the subdomain even though doom9.org is obviously the primary domain (doom9.net and www.doom9.net forward to it). It is displayed on the upper right corner of ther main page as "Doom9.org" even though this URL format does not work.
Considering that this is one site that cannot be reached with the typical "add 'www.' and '.com'" shortcut (CTRL + Enter), it should not be more difficult to reach than any normal domain.
Of course it can be reached with the lesser-known CTRL + Shift + Enter (.org) and Shift + Enter (.net) shortcuts. Key word: Lesser known. Even those that know it end up resorting to it after all else fails so why enforce that on visitors?
Love the site. Keep up the good work. That's not just empty praise: I will donate sopmeday when I have money to spare. Thanks!

There are technical reasons that make it impossible to use the round robin with failsave switchover and servers that use dynamic IP addresses along with a single dot domain name and my DNS provider.
As you might have noted, doom9.net also forwards to www.doom9.org - there's a reason doom9.org without any prefix is never used anywhere. And the second time you type the url all that you need to type is "do".. so it's really a moot issue.

Actually, it's used without the "www" on the main page (upper-right hand corner). ;)
That said, I now see that the title bar reports the site as Doom9.net as if it is the primary domain (though it simply forwards to www.doom9.org), so now I'm unsure which you actually refer to yourself as. :)
Technical reasons are as good as any for leaving out a DNS entry for doom9.org without the prefix... it just might be a good idea to update the main page to referr to it with the www. part.
My school uses a .org domain even though it is a school and it too does not work without the www. part. This causes a lot of confusion because there are other schools occupying the same domain with the other top-level domains (.com, .edu, etc). Sure enough, they wasted their money on a radio comercial telling everyone to go to "northwesterntech.org" (changed to protect identity) without mentioning the www. part. After that fails, a user is likely to try it with .edu or .com or without the tech (almost all valid domains for other schools) and they will waste their time pecking around the wrong school's website. Most don't mention their state/province/country on the main page. ;)

No No Doom9 is talking about how the 'www' isn't possible because of the way the back end server is configured

Backwards. Try it yourself: It works with www., but not without.
