Apocalypto cannot ripped with any ripper available

I tried to backup my copy of Apocalypto (R2 Germany).

After using my whole arsenal (incl. Ripit4me and AnyDVD), no result.
No Ripper can load the ifos, so that that DVD is not recognized.
There is no log.-file, because the DVD is not loaded.
Anyone came across a new copy-protection (maybe an invalid DVD-structure or something like that...) and solved it?

It uses a similar scheme to that used on Perfume, i.e. a disc structure that Windows sees one copy of and a hardware player decodes correctly as it uses only references in the VIDEO_TS.IFO.

BTW, I also rented this and it plays fine on PoweDVD 7, unlike Perfume did when I rented that, so either PowerDVD has been updated to not rely on the Windows file system, or the protection scheme has been modified to make it more software-player friendly. It wasn't worth me renting it though as I don't speak German and it only had German subtitles and Malay language......

Use DVDFab HD Decrypter (http://www.dvdfab.com/free.htm).

It was updated a few days ago to support this latest Protect DVD variant.

@greath: I backed up Perfume without problems with changing some setting in DVDDecrypter (Iso Mode) and R4me. It loaded correctly. Must be something different on Apocalypto i guess.

DVDFab and AnyDVD both do this DVD. Make sure you have the latest versions of both.

Although it's quite possible that a different protection scheme was used on your R2 version than my R1 version, I'd suggest you try the following procedure (It was successful for me for my R1 DVD) using RipIt4me in the specific sequence listed:

FIRST open RipIt4Me - and select "Wizard" mode or "One click" mode

THEN load the DVD

The R2 release is reportedly using the idiotic Protect DVD Video as seen on other recent German releases. As such, R4M won't work to rip it, unfortunately.

There's something interesting/ironic that these most recent copy protection schemes continue to appear ONLY on R2 GERMANY releases when, as I understand it, German law specifically forbids making copies of DVDs, whether you own the original or not...

Unfortunately it would seem safe to assume that it wouldn't make economic sense for the company that developed 'Protect DVD' only to market it in only one European country.

I suspect they're probably using Germany as a testing ground prior to releasing 'Protect DVD' elsewhere but at least we already have the tools to cope with it.

@setarip_old: There´s kind of a grey zone in Germany about backing up your legally purchased DVDs and CDs. You are allowed to make private copies and not allowed to break a copy protection. But when it stays private, up to the present i know no legal action against that.
I spend my hard earned money on that copy, so it´s mine and as long as i don´t sell these copys, there is no loss to the film industry (just my opinion).

Stand alone players are having issues with it, and completely forget about trying to play an original on a PC without something like AnyDVD running in the background. All this stuff does is annoy the people who actually buy movies. Very frustrating...

My guess as to WHY they can't play it is that I feel that a bunch of "stand alone" players on the market are nothing more than controller cards plugged into standard DVD-ROM drives...iow, computer components strapped into a cheap aluminum case. This helps the mfg's keep the cost down, but, if the protection is designed to disallow a PC DVD-ROM drive from reading a disc then it's likely that these stand alone players will also have issues. Corrupting the UDF file system is beyond ridiculous. I've been told that "normal" players use information in the IFO to find the uncorrupted data on the disc. I don't really have a good understanding of that process but I get the basics. To me, these discs are breaking the DVD standard and therefore shouldn't carry the logo, but, that's just me.

So, yes, protection removal becomes critical at that point.

Could you specify "DVD" in the thread title? I know, it seems like overnight this forum has become heavily HD-oriented, but it certainly can't be assumed. I have the BD and I was worried that I couldn't rip it. ;)

Anyway, my BD rip plays EXTREMELY slow in PowerDVD with a P4 3.2GHz Hyperthreaded CPU. Is this normal? Could it be because I don't have a BD drive and I have to use Nero Image Drive + SlySoft AnyDVD HD?
