Did MS just break the xbox hddvd for XP?

Sorry I cant be more specific. I've tried it now on a few machines to the same results - my xbox hddvd drive is no longer detected as a removable media device.

It is now a "usb mass storage device", with no associated drive. There's another windows update that I went ahead and grabbed - it provided "drivers" to the hddvd memory unit 0 and 1 that were previously unknown, but it didn't fix this.

Did MS slip a firmware update to my drive, or a new driver that refuses to see this as an anydvd-able drive?

I wouldn't know since "automatic updates" service is disabled on all my 11 XP machines.

I guess they did not update the firmware, otherwise we would be hearing a lot of screams by now.

Try System Restore if you don't have a decent backup and let us know.

I almost always turn automatic updates off as well. This happened while I was focused on solving a different problem.

So far, 2 machines exhibit this symptom and 1 (HTPC) does not. That's reassuring, as they haven't crossed over into updating firmware via windows update (yet). I'll investigate further. 1 of the machines that exhibits this is a freshly installed XP box that was immediately patched up to the most recent/available.

What a shame--why is it in Microsoft's interest to hobble this piece of hardware? It's not exposing HDCP's holes.. I'm actually curious if the same thing is happening in vista, or if they trust their hdcp chain there..

I just tested my XBOX360 HD-DVD drive on my fully patched Vista HTPC, and it's still working fine (via AnyDVD HD.)

I haven't tried it on XP lately but I'd be very surprised if they did something to their driver to disable use with a PC. That wouldn't work; people would just re-install the old driver, and set Windows to ignore that particular driver update via Microsoft Update.

I justed tested, and my drive [still] works under XP. I have automatic updates enabled.

I would re-install the Toshiba UDF 2.5 driver and reboot.

I had a problem for awhile where I couldn't read a disc. I had to uninstall AnyDVDHD and it worked again. I then reinstalled AnyDVDHD and it's now fine. Apparently, AnyDVD was screwing something up.

OP is talking about the firmware, not software. If firmware is updated, you can not restore it unless you backed it up and know how to flash it back.

And I suppose most people don't do / know former or latter..

But MS is too smart to make a brick out of your drive, so I wouldn't be too worried.
