Guys the new version of PS3 video9 can remux a 5.1 high profile mkv x264 etc in minutes !!! No need to re-encode.

With firmware 1.8 and some "special sauce" as quoted. It works I have tried it.

Sorry but the thread title is iritating Sony is not gonna support MKV for the time being (maybe somewhere in the future, but i doubt this very much knowing Sony :P ) "PS3 video9 can now remux High Profile MKV's into MP4. This is great !!" Would have been much better then iritating people with "PS3 can now play High Profile MKV's" this sounds like the Firmware has been changed and this would mean Sonys Hypervisor has been circumvented and this would be big big news :P

Yeah, totally misleading title and I'm quite disappointed after reading the actual post. The same thing could probably have been accomplished with MP4Box or something. Now, if Sony released a firmware that supports MKV, then that would be big news.

I have a feeling MKV will be stranded on our PCs for the longest time.

I like MKV very much, but the device support seems to scream MP4.

You mean High Profile H.264. I doubt MKV will ever be officially supported. For whatever reason, commercial companies tend to avoid MKV.

Anyway, I was so distracted by the thread title, that I forgot what this means. High Profile support in MP4 is awesome. That opens up a lot of options for PS3 owners (not that I ever intend to get one, but I like the fact that HP H.264 in MP4 support is becoming more widespread).

Someone will need to do some tests and tell us if it really supports HP; or if it has any retarded limitations.

Actually, the poster is actually right saying there's something new about the new 1.8 firmware... IT SUPPORTS HIGH PROFILES AVC!!!

Previous PS3 firmwares only played main profile on the mp4 container, althought they could play high profile from m2ts files. Now high profile is supported on the mp4 container as well.

What the converter is doing is the same thing I've done manually in the past: using mkvextract to get the separate streams, convert the ac3 audio into aac audio and using mp4box to merge them, carefully marking the avc stream as level 4.1 instead of the usual stupid 5.1.
