DVD to XviD/DivX

I am experiencing troubles converting DVDs to Xvid/DivX and nothing I try seems to work. This is what I'm doing:
Using #1 DVD Ripper to rip straight from DVD to Xvid.
That's all I'm doing. But for some reason, whenever I play the file, it will not play correctly (the video looks all distorted and there's no audio) in VLC, nor can I open it in VirtualDub to mux it with a better audio file. This is confusing me greatly. I just want to be able to rip straight from DVD to XviD quickly then mux with VBR MP3 and be able to play them in VLC.
Could anybody perhaps know why?
Also, the original file (not muxed) will play perfectly in WMP, but I don't want to play them in WMP, and I'm not able to anyway after I mux the video with the vbr mp3 file.
This is making absolutely no sense. Also, I've tried SEVERAL DVD to XviD (also tried converting straight to DivX, but I'm getting the same problem) programs and I get the same results.
It can't be that I'm running Vista because the programs say they support Vista, and I can use these same programs to convert from DVD to MPG just fine. ANY help would be greatly appreciated.

All your troubles more than likely stem from your "#1 DVD Ripper." AutoGK will perform the same task as long as the disk in question doesn't have any advanced copy protection, and that can be defeated fairly easily with any one of a number of softwares, such as DVDFab Decrypter (which offers a freeware version), RipIt4Me (No longer being actively updated, but can pre-rip any disk released more than a month ago) or AnyDVD (Commercial, works in the background to allow programs such as AutoGK to directly process the protected disk).

Actually, it's not JUST that program. Every program that I use to converts DVD straight to XviD (not transferring of the .vob to the computer) has the same problem. But it's only when converting to avi, there is no problem when converting to MPG.
Anyway, I don't want to have to use AutoGK or those programs because I'd have to copy the disc to my computer that takes forever because this drive can only read 8x but burn 26x, which doesn't seem to make any sense, but that's hot it is.

a dvd IS mpeg :rolleyes:

ripping a dvd takes 10-20 minutes on my 3 year old pc. it takes
2-3 hours to encode it to xvid though. i REALLY fail to see why
its such a problem for you to rip the dvd first.

Hi!Every program that I use to converts DVD straight to XviD (not transferring of the .vob to the computer) has the same problem.Which specific programs have you used to do this?

Have you tried to convert to DivX-compressed .AVI instead?

You might want to find out if you can disable the RipLock protection on your model of drive, as well.

Well Klouny, you must know that the Avi library included in Vista is broken & several programs using it to mux audio and video produces corrupted avi files. I'm sorry but you have no choice, you have to encode & mux with a program that uses its own routine.
Personally, i recommend MeGUI (http://mirror01.x264.nl/x264/megui-install.exe) as encoder coz it's a full featured GUI (choose RAWASP as video file format, not avi) & mux the resulting streams into Matroska container (since you plan to play files with VLC) ;)

You'll just have to Google, I've never had a drive with riplock, so I don't know much about it other than its effects. Googling riplock+your drive's model number should turn up something.
