Settings with Divx 6.1.1 for good video

I am compressing a DVD to Divx for the first time, using Max DVD to AVI converter by PowerImage and the Divx 6.1.1 codec (1 Logical CPU). My first results are a little pixelated, and I was wondering if anyone could give me advice for tuning up the video with the settings. Settings are as follows:

Output frame rate: 29
Output size: 352x288

Certification Profile: Home Theater Profile
Bitrate Encode Mode: 1-pass 780 kbit/s
Balanced Encoding Mode
Bidirectional coding: Adaptive Single Consecutive
Video Resolution: Keep Resoltion
Noise Reduction: Off
Interlace: Progressive source
Quantization: H.263

use 2-pass, unrestricted profile and something slower than "Balanced Encoding Mode".

Some of those "do it all for you" programs don´t give you two pass options.

Better quality or extreme quality settings are good as Sirber sugested.
I think the 6.1 codec has h263 optimized , if not just update your codec to the latest version.
Bitrate Encode Mode: 1-pass 780 kbit/s
This is scary,I´ve never seen an avi.file that looked good at this bitrate. If these encodes are for psp you might get away with it. I would jack them up to about 1500 to 2000.

thanx for replies. Yes, I can see now that the definition for the "Home Theatre Profile" is actually for gaming consoles, etc. I selected the "High Definition Profile" instead, which is
1-pass, 3000 kbit/s. There was no option for 2-pass in the encode mode. The other options were "Multipass, 1st pass" and "Multipass, nth pass". Are either of these good options?

Also, I looked at the Encoding mode. The other two options are "Fastest" and "High Performance", but both indicate faster encoding rates than the "Balanced" mode. Which do you think is best?

Also, two other novice questions if you don't mind.

1) Do most people chose to compress the audio when compressing DVDs, or not? I've been trying to compress my audio but for some reason, the program keeps hitting an error and shutting itself down whenever I do.

2) At 3000 kbs, the file size comes out to around 3.5GB, and at 1500 kbs the file size comes out to around 2GB. The divx files I've seen that around the same length with good video quality are usually either around 800mb or 1.5GB. Is there a way to reduce the file size, while retaining good video quality?

I myself like AC3

I think you need to do some reading in the basic section. This will help you with audio problems and file sizes.

Try a couple of other programs eg: AutoGK or staxrip, are a couple that spring to mind. This forum has ample imformation on every topic you could imagine and more ,you will have to search a bit.
