Hello,
for at least 2 months I try to find a solution to playback HD DVD on my HTPC. I invested a lot of money, bought a lot of new hardware cause I'm very fascinated of the new Media. Unfortunately I always run into Problems when trying to play a HD DVD without any judder (hopefully that's correct english :-) ). Perhaps someone can help me here cause in the German forums I found no solution.
Here a just a few questions if anyone knows something about one question I would be very happy to get information on it.
1) The Problem with the Graphic card
The first thing I didn't understand yet is the hardware acceleration of the GPU. I heard many many times that it is not recommend to use this because then Reclock doesn't work (the Vsync) and you will never get a smooth Playback. Now there is much new hardware (8600 GT for example that has an extended acceleration). Does anyone know if that will work better even without Reclock? I just don't want to buy another card and then it is the same like all the others I have. (Nvidia 7300 GS Nvidia 7600GS, ATI X1650, ATI X1600, Onbaord X1200)
2) The Problem with the operating System
Well, XP is really not to bad. It has many patches and many bugs have been fixed. However I think it is good to make experience with new systems just to profit form the new possibilities. So I tried Vista in my HTPC and have to say it needs lots of resources but runs very stable. The only thing that really stops me from using it is that Reclock doesn't work properly on Vista. As I write in the first question this wouldn't be a problem if a accelaration by the GPU would work. So again: Has anybody a solution where HD DVD (or DVD, TV) could be played smooth.
3) The problem with the Onboard Graphics (HDMI)
Well as it does make sense to use the Onboard Grafic Chip I bought an Board with the new 690G chipset and x1200 Graphics. I thought this would be perfect for HTPC because it has HDMI (version 1.2) can be cooled very simple and is not to expensive. I used XP first and tried to play an HD DVD with PowerDVD. It worked and even the HDCP handshake worked BUT: The picture was so bad in quality. There was jitter and some very strong tearing. For a test I build in a X1650 and now it worked much better (not perfect but much much better). I then used Vista and there the Onboard Graphic worked much better. The jitter was not there any longer but again no smooth playback :-( And with Vista you could not use Reclock so everything starts again from the very first beginning.
4) The Problem with the Sound
Well as I described before I used PowerDVD 7.3 for HD DVD Playback. Together with an X1650 or Nvidia 7600 GS on Windows XP and Reclock there was almost a smooth playback possible. The problem now is when using the SPDIF and digital sound reclock doesn't work any longer (yellow symbol) and you have the same problem again. For me personally it is absolutely necessary to use the SPDIF because the quality of analogue Onboard sound really sucks.
Well, I wrote a lon description but to just summarize it: In General the Playback works and the quality is good. The problem always starts when not being possible to use reclock. Do you have the same experience? Any new Hardware or Software (eg. new Renderer EVR) that can help me out.
Thank you very much.
Bye
