problems backing up Venus

I am having problems backing up my copy of the movie Venus, I tried dvd shrink and it failed then I tried ripit4me and it comes up with a dirty or scratched disk error and stops. THe dvd is brand new I just bought it. I had the same error when I tried to back up my copy of The Queen, which I exchanged and still got the same error. Is it some new encryption giving this message? My understanding is ripit4me is no longer allowed to be updated? are there any programs available to handle this error? Thank you

Be that as it may, both "The Queen" and "Venus" should be readily rippable" using RipIt4Me, by doing the following:

FIRST open RipIt4Me and select either "Wizard" mode or "One click" mode.

THEN load the DVD

After DVD Decrypter has finished, select "Yes" for "Step 3B" and then "Yes" again for "FixVTS"...

I never posted about the Queen, just assumed it was protected and ripit4me wasn't able to handle it, but when it happened with Venus thought I would give it a go, I have done the one click mode with ripit4me but never saw any options to select step 38 or for fixvts. It just comes uo with the dirty disk error. Any suggestions? Thank you

Since you've not stated that you did so and it may be critical, I'll ask if you performed the following in the EXACT sequence stated:

FIRST opened RipIt4Me and select either "Wizard" mode or "One click" mode?

THEN loaded the DVD?

If so, unless your DVDs are physically damaged, poorly pressed, or dirty, RipIt4Me should successfully analyze it and then start DVD Decrypter.

After DVD Decrypter has finished, select "Yes" for "Step 3B" (not "38") and then "Yes" again for "FixVTS"...

If you again see the "dirty disk" error message, try cleaning it. If, after cleaning, the error message persists, return the DVD to the place of purchase in exchange for a new one.

(FYI - I was able to backup "The Queen", using RipIt4me v.6.4 and the exact sequence of procedures that I've posted here.)

I am retrying venus now, and I did exactly what you have said to do, and did the wizard mode which gave me control over the steps including 3b, I wondered about the ripit4me version I am using Version 1.7.1.0 (March 22, 2007) which was the last posted version of the program, should I use a different version is there a newer one I am not aware of? Or should I look for an older version? I believe I kept each version as new ones were released. Thanks again.

I won't attempt to answer your new questions until you finish your ripping of "Venus" and post the results back here.

Don't forget to use the "FixVTS" step after Step "3B" is finished

dvd Fab decrypter always works as well - and is free, of course.

I'm a creature of habit, so I still do it in 2 steps. I use DVD Decrypter and then Shrink (but I never, ever compress). But when it doesn't work, I simply use Fab Decrypter instead. No special steps needed. It has been years since I've had to come to doom9 in search of dvd help. ;)

Yes I did what you said and it worked like a charm. Now to work on Queen tomorrow, thank you for all of your help and patience. And very sorry for breaking any of the forums rules. I will be more careful in the future. thank you again.

I use dvd shrink simply to reauthor, but I used to use it to split the movie before dvd dl's existed and before I could get them for a buck. I don't like the menu's, warnings, etc. I have used ifoedit to reauthor, though I can no longer remember why. Probably when converting a dvr cable rip or something.

EDIT: and I probably shouldn't have said "never, ever", because I'm sure I have a few dozen that have some slight compression (like 95% or so) - but only some of my older discs

I can't afford too many a week - so it has been a slow process. More since I've quit smoking and drinking though. ;)
