Hi,
CBR stands for Constant BitRate. What this means is that the audio source you are encoding ( compressing ) is represented by a constant number of bits for a given amount of time.
An example of this are say a CBR 128 kbps mp3 file - the mp3 codec for this file uses 128 000 bits per second to represent the sound. Of course the higher the bitrate the higher the quality of the sound and .: the file is larger.
very simplified view of the process btw.

Thanx Diji1 !
In fact i've found the explanation a few minutes later but u've just confirmed it !
So if i've well understood, when i demux an ac3 stream from a vob with smartripper, i get a CBR ac3 file, that's right ?

i don't know about ac3 but i think cbr, abr and vbr, when used somewhere on doom9's site, stands for the mp3 encoding method.

CBR isn't just mp3 it includes pretty much any codec whose bitrate is approximately constant. AC3 and regular mp3 are CBR.
CBR also refers to the default mode of the divx codecs, but you'll find that even in CBR mode the bitrate at a certain point can vary.

if you want to obtain information of mp3 go to
r3mix (http://www.r3mix.net)
And read the page of quality and others.
The page is outdated for the current lame version settings (use --alt-preset modes) if you want more information go to:
www.hydrogenaudio.org (http://www.hydrogenaudio.org)
All this is for mp3 and the www.hydrogenaudio.org (http://www.hydrogenaudio.org) link is for every good audio format.
