I have several h.264 .mkv AV files I'd like to simply change to AVI. Each of the .mkv files has only 1 audio stream. Is there a simple tool that could I use to switch containers with "direct streams"? No re-encoding is needed.

My ultimate goal is to use Nero to re-size/re-encode these files for a portable device, but Nero doesn't seem to accept .mkv files for transcoding.

So why don't you try different encoders then Nero, which accept MKV files. What is you target format?

SUPER, MediaCoder, MeGUI or VirtualDub (througr AviSynth) might be the right choice.

Hi there, well, I have Nero, and I like its quality AVC encodes, which is what I want - fast and easy for my portable stuff. Upon further reading though, it might be better to have AVC stream from the MKV's in MP4's rather than AVI's.

But, I don't think MP4 files can contain AC3 audio, which means I'd have to transcode the audio first and then remux into MP4. On the other hand, AVI can contain AC3, so I'd rather use AVI as a quick intermediate step. Then, use Nero to re-encode to ipod AVC.
