Is there a tool to display profile/level for an AV file?

I suppose the title says it all. I think it would interesting to see which profile is called for by a given AV file to determine its compatibility with different playback devices. :thanks:

It's as accurate as what it stored in the bitstream :)

That is the profile should be ok because thats straightforward to set, and x264 does that automatically, but levels is a grey area due to VBV stuff and level dependant features like interlacing or certain block sizes.

So basically if it was stored in the bitstream correctly, then what you see is what you get. If it is not (such as an encode specifying 5.1 when it easily falls within 3), then that may not help you much.

MP4Box doesn't analyze the file really, just reads what it in the H.264 header.

However there may be a tool to parse the H.264 file and report the profile and level (perhaps JM can do this?), and it's one I'd be appreciative of if anyone knows of one, or has a build of the JM software.
