Hi,

I have been searching the whole internet (well, via google) for a video editor that will allow me to trim some mpeg2 files with an ac3 file and output the newly trimmed files back as a .m2v and .ac3 file.

I have tried loads of them, from freeware to trialware (no demoware ones though). The issue is that the video source is 29.97 fps with repeat frames. A lot of the freeware ones would not handle the repeat frames right. Basically, the repeat frames would be ignored completely, so a 29.97 fps video file would be played back as though it was 23.97 fps. I have a program that allows me to patch the mpeg2 file with a new frame rate of 23.07 fps and it works fine in most cutters, but that is losing the 29.97 fos with repeat frames, I need to trim a segment of a larger video and I would like to keep the compatibility without converting the whole thing.

The second issue that I have is that I need to make a cut in the middle of a GOP segment. Most cutters only allow cutting on the I-Frame. I do not wish to lose any quality of the video. Is it possible to convert a frame to an I-Frame so I can make a cut right before that frame? Or, is there an encoder that can re-encde that part of the GOP? I have access to a computer with CCE, so is there a gui that would use that? I do not wish to re-encode any of it, so is tehre a way to tell CCE just to do that one small part and leave the rest the same bitrate? Or another coder perhapse?

The closest video editor I found to my needs is VirtualDub MPEG2 edition, but it only saves as avi and I need it saved back as the demuxed .m2v and .ac3 file. I am going to post in the VirtualDub forum if anyone is willing to take VDub and add MPEG/AC3 output to it.

I hope you can help me find a solution.

Thanks,
SS

@StifflerStealth:

Have you tried Womble (http://womble.com) yet? I use it all the time...it can direct-stream-copy mpeg2, and ac3, vob etc... :)

Womble is what I'd suggest, as well. I frequently use it to compliment Sony Vegas Pro 8 and PPro CS3. PPro is definately one of the worst programs I've dealt with for MPEG-2 content (especially when I'm in the mood to play around with content from a commerical DVD), and while Vegas is a considerable improvement in that regard (and overall usability in general), Womble takes care of the MPEG-2 content the other two can't despite their higher price tags.
