I'm trying to burn a DL video with a verbatim +r DL disc. I want to try and use IMGBurn to create the image, and then to burn the image. The instructions say load the .MDS file to IMGBurn since it has the layer break info. OK, but the question is do I select "calculate optimal" and then load the .MDS file, then burn, or do I select "user specified" and input the value from the log, and then burn? The first option would appear correct, but I don't need to create any coasters. Previously I would use PGCEdit to create the image and would manually input the layer break info into IMGBurn. Also, I noticed that the layer break is different when created by IMGBurn then when created by PGCEdit, even though I select the exact same cell for the layer break. Any suggestions for this rookie?

Use Calculate Optimal. Anyway, ImgBurn will not let you burn a coaster (unless you confirm that it's what you want!) ;)

PgcEdit uses Mkisofs to build the ISO, while ImgBurn use its own method to layer the files on disc. As a consequence, the length of the stuff needed at the beginning of the DVD is different (header, lead in, file system...) This is why the position of the layer break is also different, even if you use exactly the same options.

Thanks rOLZ for the quick response. So is one method of creating the image more acceptable or reliable? ( I'm dancing here around using the " B " word. ) Or perhaps just another method of the many ?

Trust ImgBurn. It is excellent, and it has the advantage over PgcEdit that it can burn your DVD-Video files directly, without having to create an ISO on HDD first.
