Not possible to register Xvid.ax

I am trying to install Xvid final but my os does not register xvid.ax

Meh.. who cares about the Xvid decoder? Use ffdshow :) It's pretty much there just for full "codec" compliance.

The VFW dll is all that really matters IIRC... though I could be wrong :)

You can configure ffdshow to decode VFW XVID also. Updated FFDShow (tryout) builds can be found here: http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=173941

SP3 ? It doesn't exist, any SP3 possibly lying around is either incomplete or complete bµll$h!t ... get rid of it right now :eek:

I do care! Xvid decoder is more stable than libvacodec in ffdshow package. I very often convert my movies to PSP and I had many problems with audio synchronization due to skiped frames. The problem disappears when I use Xvid decoder.

This hotfix pack (http://www.thehotfix.net/sp3_2.php) is what people usually call "SP3", or one of the other private versions that sprung up since it stopped getting updated. Because regular hotfixes are forked instead of cumulative, though, the end result is much different from a real SP, so at best you get a collection of security patches plus a few updates.

Not smart IMO.
I have heard others talk of SP3 for XP and I thought that I had not heard of the real thing, what I have heard is talk of it being beta'd Q3/Q4 this year, if its going to happen at all. If it does not come from M$ it cant 'really' get called a srv pack.

I have had problems with getting XviD to work 'right' and removing the .ax from system32 and the registry by hand helped a lot

Oh my, thx for the heads up ! I also got a pack with some security updates from XP's launch to 2007 but it wasn't called SP3 nor was it supposed to "replace" it. "Not smart" is what describes the initiative best indeed, because appart from the name, I was quite happy to find a similar update pack before formatting my system (it did save me like 5 reboots and hours waiting for the whole stuff to download, hehe). Fancy blaming average joe for being ignorant when "knowledgeable" people use silly names ...

@piroshok: by any chance did you have a video running, or where you browsing a directory with video's inside when the error occured ? Else, did you cleanly manage to uninstall a previous version of xvid ? (or not, which would explain your troubles and the solution Lenny_nero is suggesting).

Actually, when did the error happen ? Was it while installing a new xvid version ? Or were you trying to register the file manually with regsvr32 ? If it's the latter, are you sure your cmd-line was pointing to xvid.ax in the place you expected ?

Last question, what do you call "xvid final" ? v1.0.3 ? v1.1.2 ? or v1.2.0-127 (beta) ?

Yes i do have a few number of hotfixes with sp3 when highlighted
I was referring to final as version 1.12
No I was no using any media when I tried to remove xvid.ax
No I have removed successfully and installed xvid working with most application with exception of few but this must be bugs
So I am pleased so far with xvid results
