Encoding end credits seperatly while leaving the main movie untouched?

Hi forum,

I do encouter a problem when I try to encode only the end credits of my Pal DVD9 movie. I am trying to fit the main movie + the menu on
one DVDR. Current size is 4,45GB and I do need to get rid of another 100mb to make it happen.

My idea is to only encode the end credits, while leaving the rest of the movie untouched. I thought about extracting the last main movie cell, however the last cell contains half of the end of the movie and the other half is the credits.

Now what's the best way to encode only the end credits (using CCE), how do I properly cut the last cell and put it back together in the end, or is there a way to encode only the credits part of the last cell using a avisynth command?

Any ideas anyone?

Using DVD-RB to re-encode only the last chapter is indeed a good idea. However, the last chapter on my DVD is not only pure end credits. There is still 2-3 minutes of the main movie, and then the credits start. So the last chapter is half movie, half credits.

I thought of extracting the last chapter, then demuxing it, cutting the .m2v in two pieces, encoding only the credits, and putting the two pieces back together. But I have no idea how to cut the .m2v properly and how to put it all back together...

Yes, the menu is very small, I shrinked it to 5mb.

u could always do a manual CCE and trim out the end credits. Then use vobblankers replace function.

Yea, but I wanna keep the credits. Just reencoded. So I need to split the last chapter in two pieces, re-encode the credits, and put back everything in place and then replace the chapter in VobBlanker. But how do I cut the chapter in two pieces and put it back together (without annoying glitches)?

OK, just forget all that, use DVD-RB with the latest RB-Opt and use the new feature; bitrate redistibution. It will work out fine.

I do not have a license for the PRO version, so I can't use DVD-RB.
It has got to be possible without DVD-RB; it will demand more effort on my part but that is fine by me. I just need to know how to split the last chapter, re-encode the credits part, and put it back together.

Use DVD shrink's Start/End feature and Mixed compression and use compression only on the Credits and not the other parts of the movie, although you will loose the Menu, since it works only in re-author mode.

But there is a trick to it, once you have your shrinked movie, open the source directory with Vobblanker and then replace the original title with the shrinked one, everything will work as usual.

Thanks for the info tech. Am not sure if I am doing it correcty.
I add the main movie in re-author-mode, I then click Set Start/End Frames, chose the beginning of the credits as Start and the end of the movie as End, click Ok, apply compression, and backup the DVD.
The problem is: Dvdshrink will only backup the credits parts (which leaves me with a 150mb Vob file). How do I re-author the complete main movie with only the credits re-encoded?

You need to first select the whole movie without any compression and select "ok" and then again click on the Start/End button and select the credits along with the compression required, shrink will remember it.

I used this feature long time back but this should work.

The problem is that the last chapter isn't only credits. It's 2-3 minutes of the end of the movie, and 3-4 minutes credits. The 2-3 minutes of the ending is supposed to stay untouched... That's the tricky part.

I think pulling 100MB from 3-4 minutes of credits is pushing it,
but the bitrate is obviously high enough this time,
still I'd just run the whole thing through shrink and cut 200 MB for safety...

anyway,

You can use shrink with re-author in three steps then, to get:
a. the transcoded credits,
b. the rest of the movie uncompressed,
c. join a and b and re-author to 2 titlesets.

You could also use CCE to encode rather than rely on a shrink transcode, if it was required in the future, with a few extra steps.

As mentioned, shrinking those credits by 100 MB might be pushing it, unless those are some especially long credits. Anyway, here's how I'd do it. First, using VobBlanker, split that last cell where the credits begin - create a new cell at that point. Then process the whole thing. Open the processed DVD with the new cell in PGCDemux or VobBlanker and extract that new last cell that contains the end credits. Reencode it to fit and author into a "mini-DVD" with Muxman. Replace the reencoded cell using VobBlanker and Process.

This is it! It is exactly what I had been looking for... Just hadn't thought of creating a new cell, that's brilliant. Also, I didn't realize that VobBlanker was such a powerful tool. :)

Edit: tech, I'd appreciate if you recall the exact steps, just so I have an alternative to the VobBlanker method. :)

I've tried your method and it works.

The below is assuming we have 20 chapters.

In re-author mode add the main movie, select start (chap 1) and end point (chap 19) with no compression.
Add the main movie again, select start (chap 19) and end point (chap 20) with compression.

thanks BT, I knew it does, you can also work with the slider and select a particular part of the movie, if the end credits are not exactly starting from a new chapter. You dont have to be specific to chapters for this.
