In advance, I apologize if this is in the wrong section. This is kind of a mix of problems, both hardware and software related, but I'm not sure which is the cause specifically. Also, it's long. But I'd appreciate any input you could give.
A month ago, I purchased a LITE-ON DVD-ROM (model number LH-20A1H-185 if you're interested) and some Verbatim DVD+Rs (model 95091), which turned out to have a Media ID of MCC002 when I used DVD Identifier and DVD Info on them. I got a friend's copy of Roxio, and tried to burn a movie onto a DVD, but it gave me this error:
Failed to start the image writing operation Error while Burning Image
80004003 Error while Aborting
I tried with a few different movies, and a few different disks, but it kept giving me this error after encoding for like three hours. I looked online for solutions, and I found some different DVD burning programs. I tried to burn with DV Decrypter, Burn4Free, ImgBurn, Roxio, and Nero 7, all of them failing. DVD Decrypter, Burn4Free, and ImgBurn all failed before even beginning to burn at all, each trying like 30 times to calibrate the power. Roxio kept giving me that annoying message, and Nero just wouldn't let me do anything at all (what a dumb program). It was weird, because I could burn CD-Rs (I tried), but not DVD+Rs.
I looked online for solutions. I found a wealth of information. I found the Media ID guide first, which looked good, but when I tried to ID the disc, neither DVD Info or DVD Identifier would work. First warning sign. I found the 10 golden rules of burning. I then found that the error I was getting with Roxio was due to power calibration, and the most common cause was bad media. True to form, I instead opted to RMA the burner, which I did.
The new burner came with Nero7 Essentials, and I installed it fine. I tried out Nero first this time, but this time, instead of giving me some dumb calibration error, the first attempt gave me this error in the log:

[16:30:34] NeroVision Burn process failed at 16x (22,160 KB/s)
I have no idea what any of the means, but I understood what "failed" meant. I tried again. This time, it gave me this ridiculous message about not being able to find some memory console of some such thing. This error came up a few times, before I began using Nero's simple dvd maker, at which point I got an error that said it couldn't burn on the DVD+R, it needed DVD-Rs.
I was pissed, because nothing had ever said that it couldn't use +Rs. SO I went out and bought DVD-Rs, Memorex in fact (4.7 GB, upto 16x, 10 pack to be exact), which turned out to have an idea of RITEKF1. Not supposed ot be as good, but I wasn't up to making excuses.
You know what happens though. It worked. Everywhere. Burning in both Nero and Roxio, DVDs and CDs, playing back on my computer and the home DVD player. I was thrilled.
Of course, the question still remains. Why will the burner and the software only burn DVD-Rs and not the DVD+Rs? Its not really important (beyond the I get amusement out of the Lightscribe feature on DVD+Rs), but its just nagging me, plus I'd like tog et some use out of the good Verbatim DVD+Rs I bought. Yes, the drivers and everything else with the burner are up to date. Yes, my computer is plenty good enough to do it.
Anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance.
