Xvid and Vista [Archive]

I wonder if someone can help me. I recently bought a new digital camera but I am unable to play the movies I record on it on my PC (sound but no picture).

I gathered this to be a codec problem so I installed and ran Gspot which said that I need the Xvid Codec. What I would like to know is, is the latest Xvid codec (from http://www.xvidmovies.com/codec/) compatible with Windows Vista? I'm aware a few things are having problems with Vista so I just wanted to make sure before I download it.

I'd be grateful for some advice.

Nothing really changed in Vista, other than a push away from directshow and towards DMOs. But there's nothing that got incompatible.

However, you're probably better off using ffdshow than Xvid. Xvid is mostly an encoder which also decodes correctly, while ffdshow is mostly a decoder, and does that very well.
