can NOT upload 16bit sound on PC from MiniDV ?

Hi, everyone, I would appreciate any help.

I have a Canon ZR850 and was playing with its setting, so switched form 12-bit to 16-bit audio and recorded a MiniDV tape, then tried to import it to my computer via WindowsMovieMaker but noticed that the audio is missing from the clips that were recorded with 16bit audio?! The sound plays ok when i review the tape on the camcorder itself but am buffled as to why it wont upload to the PC. I googled the problem and have seen scattered post on the subject but not a suluton?

Any input please ?

Welcome to the forum, petrushko.

I suggest you try to capture the DV using the WinDV freeware (see "Links" sticky).

It is strange that you experience problems with 16 Bit audio while 12 Bit audio works fine. Usually it's the other way round...

NO, It didnt work, for some reason? The first 5 minutes of the tape are recorded with 12bit audio, then i played with the settings and switched to 16bit audio, so basically I am buffled. The sound plays ok on the camcorder itself but will not play on the computer ?!

any ideas?

What happens if you fast-forward to the footage you recorded with 16 Bit audio and start recording from there? Maybe the audio type switch is not recognised correctly during the capture process.

I've tried it too, no luck, still no sound. It is pretty weird isnt it...

Try our Enosoft DV Processor (you need XP/Vista).

After installing it, connect your camcorder, turn it on and put it in play/pause mode with the tape you are having trouble with. Windows will show a menu of software you can use. Choose our software. It will open and automatically connect to the camcorder. You will see a small window with the video. Below, you will see information about the audio and video. Play the tape (no need to capture) - pay close attention to the audio information. Please post back what you find.

The DV specification supports three different types of 16-bit audio - 32kHz, 44.1kHz (same as CD) and 48.0kHz. Very few programs support the 44.1kHz. Our program will show you which type of audio is present. Also, it displays audio meters. If you see the audio meters working for the part of the tape that seems empty, it suggests that the audio format is not supported by the software you are using. Finally, confirm that the audio really is there (i.e., via headphones connected to the camcorder or via a TV etc).

this is very weird, i tried uploading on 2 different computers, and nothing worked, still the same problem - no audio when MiniDV is taping with 16bit audio?!?! i tried a few other softwares, and nothing helped??!

i think you might have the same problem that i had. The solution for me was to split up the capturing. First you capture the part that has 12-bit sound and save it in one file. After that you capture the part that has a 16-bit sound. For me it worked. Seems like it doesnt work with mixed audio in one file. I hope this helps you.
