Some m2t Files Play only Audio Portion

I'm comparing some camera models, including Sony FX1, V1U and for kicks, Canon HV20.

The Sony clips play on Windows Media Player on my XP Pro SP1 machine, but the HV20 clips show and audio waveform instead of the video. Ie, the visualization animation shows, instead of the HDV video.

WMP makes no attempt to download a CODEC.

Is there a way to install the right CODEC?

Or maybe it's time I bit the bullet and installed SP2?

UPDATE:

Just finished installing SP2. Didn't make a difference. Still can't play some of the m2t files. My wife's Dell laptop can play all of these files. She's got XP SP2, and I deduced that SP2 had more CODECs for WMP. Apparently I was wrong.

Since I don't have an SSE2 enabled processor at the moment, I'm not able to edit HDV, but I'd like to be able to play back the footage and send it to my 47" LCD via HDMI, which I already have connected. The problem is that some clips don't play the video portion on this machine. They do play on my wife's laptop computer, and she has no special applications, other than the base stuff that Dell put on the hard drive.
So I'm wondering how to play these clips on my workstation. Any ideas?

Yes, WMP Classic gives the following errors:

"The DLL CPUinf32.dll cannot be loaded..."
and
"The DLL mplapx.dll cannot be loaded..."

followed by the Program error message and application crash.

What is VLC?


I've downloaded a bunch of Canon HV20 footage and am trying to evealuate it, but much of it has this audio-only problem.

UPDATE:
I've downloaded a new version of WMP Classic and this does play the files, but the problem now is that instead of video on the external monitor, I get a black rectangle. And I can't find where to turn off overlays, like I had to in WMP9, in order to get the video to display on my LCD. Any idea how to turn off overlays?

I spent quite a bit of time messing around in the options of WMP Classic, and, it's buried in there, among several choices, but the player does have a mode where it doesn't use overlays, which enables me to show the video on the big screen via DVI. Matter resolved. Thanks for the WMP Classic suggestion!
