hey,
because of the xbox360 dashboard update coming this week (that allows the playback of simple mpeg4), i am contemplating converting all my tv shows to mpeg4 (as they will work on my ipod also, so 2 birds with 1 stone).
could somebody give me a list of recomended bitrates and such for certain types of show and resolutions?
thanks
ps.
360 can play:
MPEG-4 Part 2 video support: Up to 5 Mbps peak, Simple Profile with 2 channel AAC LC
H.264 video support: Up to 10 Mbps peak, Baseline, Main, and High profiles with 2 channel AAC LC

DivX & XviD are mpeg4 codecs alright, you don't need to convert anything.
If the console won't accept the avi files, just "re-pack" them in MP4 using mp4box (takes a couple of minutes only)

so, i just need to use mp4box to make the avi's a simple profile mp4 ?

Most likely. XviD and DivX are both implementations of the MPEG-4 Part 2 standard.
One thing, though, your encodes have to be Simple Profile. Then again, what are the chances you encoded with a bitrate over 2.5Mbps, higher than 640x480 resolution, GMC and a billion consecutive b-frames? Okay, the billion consecutive b-frames is improbable, but I believe the limit for Simple Profile is 2. You will have to convert audio to AAC LC, though.
MPEG4 Modifier (http://moitah.net/#MPEG4Modifier) is a very nice program you can use to check your AVIs.

Simple -> No b-frames, no mpeg/custom matrix. Simple is basically plain h.263; it's extremely restrictive and you'll have to double your bitrates. Xvid does have a set of simple profile presets if you'd like to use it, as you'll usually have to, since b-frames are ubiquitous. (If you have to use them, I would strongly advise using a fast x264 constant quality preset instead; you get a bitrate at least as low as the source and the flexibility of high profile.)
However, the update may support some ASP features, like b-frames, but can't advertise since it doesn't support all. We'll see.

I stand corrected. Almost all my encodes have b-frames and I'm betting yours do, too. The ones that don't were made 3 years ago with DivX 4. That being the case, go ahead and convert to AVC.

buzz, you make sure you try reading the avi's as is first (eventually just renaming the extension to mp4 if the xbox doesn't see anything but mp4 files), if it doesn't work, you re-pack to MP4 using mp4box. If you get video but no audio, you just re-encode your audio to AAC LC. If you get nothing, you don't have a choice but to re-encode everything to AVC as my colleagues stated :(
if you avi files contain mpeg-4 asp streams, which i guess is the case, you need to reencode the video streams to simple profile (eg in virtualdub with xvid, by ticking the simple profile switch)
remux the resulting avi to mp4 with mp4box

Can i use Nero Recode 2 to do it?
if you are able to force nero to encode to simple profile, yes
