x264 - How to create 'Nero Digital' compliant content

Hi,
there are 'Nero Digital' certified stand-alone dvd players that (correct me if i'm wrong) support h.264.

What profile/template do i have to choose in MeGUI to create compliant output files that will play in such players and is it worth to prefer that format to DivX/XviD?

Good question with an answer that no one really knows except the people at Nero.

The Ateme implementation that Nero Recode uses is very similar to x264. Both are compliant with the H.264 standard and both, with the same settings, should produce equivalent video streams that should be compatible with the stand-alones.

The only GUI for Ateme's codec is Nero Recode AFAIK. So whatever settings Recode has is what should be done with x264.

Check the XML file in C:\Documents and Settings\"Your Name"\Application Data\Nero\NeroDigital which should reveal plenty of information. If anybody can translate this to a profile for AutoMKV and x264 I would be very interested. Sharkie, you reading this?

As well, a good benchmark is Nero ShowTime. If x264 content plays in ShowTime, and even QuickTime, then it SHOULD play in the Nero Digital AVC stand-alones coming up. It SHOULD.

Then again, Nero shouldn't be the only company stamping/making/certifying AVC stand-alones in the future. If the Nero Digital AVC players don't accept x264 content, another company surely will make one that will. H.264 is a standard, and should (in theory) get support from whatever compliant implementation exists, including of course x264.

H.264/AVC is not exclusively Nero's.

Other than that, I have no clue what's going to happen. I know for sure years from now this won't be an issue, but it would be nice to know what will happen in the near-future.

You can just use DivX/Xvid and get stand-alone support right now, however you will not enjoy the same quality per file size. The format may also not be as viable in the long run.

There are some more devices and most of them cost around 50eur. I doubt they can handle avc high-profile. Must be next generation.

I don't have one but they came available short after nero recode appeared.

You can make any definition of the word "generation" you like, because it's not just High Profile they don't support, it's the whole H.264 standard itself they don't support (yet).

They all support ASP only (as well as MPEG-2 of course). Not sure if it's only Nero's ASP and not DivX/Xvid, but they are not AVC.

We are all still waiting for the first DvD stand-alone player that supports AVC (Nero Digital or x264 or other implementation), similiar to the way many current ones support DivX.
