My system time is lately behaving funnily.

1. On startup (my boot screen shows Press F1 for defaults to be loaded, and I do), it shows January 1, 2003, 12:01 pm.

2. Not only at startup, sometimes it happens while I am working.

I have AVG free installed.

What do I do?

I've had one of my machine's clock go completely screwy. It would go from 12:30AM to ~1:36AM, then cycle back to 12:30AM. It would do it over and over again. I sat there and watched it do it just to make sure I wasn't going crazy.

What broken crystal?

Perhaps a dying CMOS battery?

You may be right. I assumed my PC battery is OK, but it's only an assumption based on the fact that my PC is around a year old and it's too early for the battery to fail. My PC is kept on for 24 hours a day.

Also I've noticed that a "CMOS Checksum error" message is displayed while booting, following which the time discrepancies occurred.

Thanks for your time, and regards.

the crystal is the thing that sets up the system clock, the system bus and all non asynch-busses, its in a little metal case(usualy) and usually only one set of connections. Pretty much the most important part of a mobo, cause nothing else will work without it

and if the cmos is giving checksum errors you might wanna try to flash it, if you're not comfortable with that send it back for repairs if you can,

You may be right...Thanks for your time, and regards.You're quite welcome!

"Thanks for your time" - Considering the topic, is there a pun in here? ;>}

I don't think that AVG would have anything to do with your problem, BUT I had Avg installed and could NOT get completely rid of it when I tried to delete it....kept screwing up my 'start-up' and caused me all kinds of problems....I'll NEVER use that again !!!
