View Full Version : New users need to wait 5 days!

Good afternoon,

I've been registering with this forum 5 days ago because back then I had a question about XviD encoding that I wanted to post here. So I browsed the forums, found the right one (I hope) and wanted to post in there as neither Google nor this board's search have found anything relevant. But the board just told me to wait 5 days before I can post. Huh? In the overview "you can/you cannot ... here" it said I can post. Seems a little uncoordinated... May be a vB issue though. Anyway, why is this? I can only imagine it's about bugging new users and scare them away again very quickly. The board's FAQ doesn't explain. Is there an official statement on this, too?

Additionally, this board's contact form is broken. It accepts messages but generates a delivery status e-mail back to my address saying that the recipient e-mail is invalid/unknown. Furthermore, this site's error reporting address hasn't reacted within 5 days. Hello, is there anybody home? Would someone notice at all if this server went down? Just wondering how communicative everybody is...

Have a nice day.

Hi and welcome to the forum,

See Sirber post above. You should have received a mail from the board for your registration with a few advices like
- use these 5 days to navigate the forums, read the guides and FAQ,
- learn to use the search functions
- read and assimilate the rules
or something related...

I can only imagine it's about bugging new users and scare them away again very quickly. The board's FAQ doesn't explain. Is there an official statement on this, too?
You cant imagine how many new users, like Sirber said, post spam and/or already-answered questions

This will be better answered by a moderator

Once again welcome and :readfaq: :search:

Ehm, sorry, no. I haven't. Just looked them up in my mailbox' deleted folder but it's only the usual "click me to validate" and "welcome" messages. Well, it didn't take me 5 days to find no answer to my question and I usually do that before registering anywhere... Search functions are nothing new to me... ;) So I must have been caught in the noob trap for a while.

Hmm.. now that you mention it...

Does the registration page mention that you have to wait 5 days to post? If not, I think it should. It would help keep people from registering and never coming back at least.

I just looked it up. Nothing to see. But I'm not sure if I would have read that if it wasn't especially highlighted or so... These board registration texts are always the same, be honest, who does still read them after the 100th time?

It's in the e-mail they send to you when you sign up. At least, it was when I did it. ;)

As I said, not in mine. Somebody wants a copy of both messages?

Now I even noticed another odd thing in the first message:
If you are still having problems signing up please contact a member of our support staff at *- which email should we use here? -*
Is the board configuration already completed at all? ;)

Despite your whining, you seem to have managed to register and post. Congratulations!

I'm sure that's 1 post closer to 10 000... and an entry into the Guinness Book (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guinness_Book_of_World_Records) of World Records (http://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/records/default.aspx).

I'm sure that even experienced users ask the same question again and again untill they get an answer...

Hehe you make a good point. I use this forum quite a lot but sometimes information I'm looking for doesn't show up in the search engine or is outdated.

In such cases a direct question seems much more effective (even though the topic might be handled before and the answer lies *somewhere* in the past 100,000 posts)

Not to mention I'd imagine all those search queries increase the load on the server substantially.

Anyway I'm not really an experienced user more like a :helpful: :P Or maybe :stupid:

Well he has been on here for 5 1/2 years! Just post four or five times a day for that long and you'll get there someday too ;) You're pretty close to that now, keep up the happy posting!

It appears that the upgrade to vbb 3.5 reverted a lot of things to its default. I have re-added the information about the 5 days wait, a link to our rules and the fact that accounts are useless unless activated right up front to the first page that comes up when you press register. In addition, the contact us link works again.

Now since this thread has turned into a rule 11 breaking contest, it will be closed.
