Help with encoding needed

I have just created an encoding PC which consists of a E6400 Core 2 Duo, 2gb ram, and 2x 500gb RAID SATA drives, amongst other things. Oh and I use Windows XP and TMPG Xpress 4.

What I would like to know is should I put the source files on the RAID drive, or just the destination ? At the moment I am going from a non-raid SATA D: drive to a RAID SATA e: drive. Would it make it faster if dest and source are on the same drive ?

Also is any PC out there now possible to create a 90 minute movie with TMPGEnc in 20 mins ? I know MainConcept can do this with the PC I own now even, but I am around 2 hours or less for a 90 min movie at the moment with TMPGEnc.

it would be faster if source and dest are diff drives.

If you need better performance, start using HC instead of TMPGEnc. As an additional bonus, the quality will be better as well.

Source and destination on two different drives are definitely faster. On your other question Nonraid is faster than RAID, RAID1 has faster read rate than RAID5 and RAID5 has faster write rate than RAID1, which RAID topology are you using.

Mainconcept is definitely faster but quality is better with TMPGenc and even better in HCenc + its free. For faster processing get a Quad core CPU and lots of RAM (2GB +) with multiple HDD.

Always remember, encoding speed is highly dependent upon the Complexity and resolution of the source/destination, Speed of your system( CPU, cache size and bus/memory speed) and availability of CPU extensions with the encoder supporting those extentions.
