AVC encoding with Nero Recode 2

I am currently using Nero Recode 2 to encode vob files to AVC. After ripping files with DVD shrink into 1 large vob file, I import them into Nero Recode. Most vob files convert correctly to .mp4. However with some vob files, Recode lists then length of the video file wrong. Usually the length is much shorter then it should be (ie 15 minutes) and recode will not convert the vob file correctly. However if I use Dr. Divx and the same vob file, I can output a divx file with the correct length. Has this happened to anyone else and is there a reason why this is happening?

What version of Recode 2 are you actually using ?
In fact, the most relevant version number is that of the Nero bundle it came in (ex: 7.5.9.0) Some versions of Recode exhibit wierd behaviour, and other versions exhibit wierd behaviour... just not the same wierdnesses ;)

Many VOB files have segmentation that throws off many applications. This is why length is not read correctly because alot of apps may recognize this dividing point as the end and produce weird results.

It's always best to properly convert VOB files to an .mpg file, then convert that to AVC.

Use NeroVision. Load the VOBs, then when a question box shows up asking if you wish to remove this segmentation click "Yes". When you finished loading them, you will find properly converted .mpg files in the Import folder that you chose.

Then use those for conversion and you won't have this problem any longer.

Just to add.

If you don't find any converted .mpg files in your Import folder, that means that the VOBs were not segmented to begin with. You can go ahead and use those into Recode and they will be trouble-free (hence the reason why some work and some don't).

It is Nero recode verison 2.2.7.6 from the nero 7 ultra bundle. Will there be any signifigant quality loss converting from .vob to mpg. I know they are both a mpeg-2 stream, but will nero vision compress the mpeg-2 stream at all when converting from vob to mpg. I also want to make sure I can keep the ac3 audio.

Not at all.

You end up with the same exact video stream. The quality loss is zero. If any is lost I have yet to notice it. As well, the file size in most cases is exactly the same. The audio is left unchanged as well.

See for yourself. Just fire up NeroVision and add video files to the interface as if you are loading them up for a DvD you want to create.

As you're loading them up a question box will appear about segmentation. Just click "Yes". You are telling Nero that you want any segmentation removed. It's this segmentation that is creating your problem.

When you've loaded all your VOBs into NeroVision you can then close the application since you're done. That's all you need to do. You don't have to continue the process to any transcoding or burning.

One of three things will happen in the Import(ed) folder (the one that you can choose in your specifications):

1) You will find an .mpg equivalent of your VOB file(s). This is the exact MPEG-2 stream without the segmentation. You can then convert this to AVC with Recode without problem.

2) You will find a joined .mpg file if your VOBs form a video bigger than 1GB. This too is valid for your conversion into Recode.

3) You will find no .mpg file in your Import folder. This means that either the VOB was less than 1GB and/or the VOB had no segmentation. Then you can go ahead and even rename this VOB to an .mpg extension and use that into Recode without any problems.

You will never have your problem when you take this small step "fixing" them with NeroVision first.
