Is it possible to know the encoder used for the resultant DVD compilation (VOB files) by any means.
One way would be to look at the matix and then match it with those used by encoder like TMPGenc, HCenc, CCE etc but this method fails if a custom matrix is used or if using adaptive matrix.
Was just curious to know if there was a means to know ???
Sometimes the encoder identifies itself in MPEG2 user data. You can see it with a binary editor.

Can you post a screenshot as an example ??, then it will be easier to follow using the editor.

As an example, just open an MPEG-2, that you've created with TMPGEnc, in a hex editor - and scan the first 1,000 bytes. You'll see a reference to "TMPGE" in that section.
On the other hand, if you're, as you state, talking about already converted to DVD-compliant .VOBs (ad .IFOs and .BUPs), I don't believe you'll find any trace of the original source program's identification...

Yeah! I was talking about the VOB's present in the DVD. But thanks for the information on the mpeg2 header.

ReStream can tell you if a vob has been encoded using CCE? If so, can you explain how and where?

I don't know how and where, but...
Once i've "restreamed" mpeg file and in "user data" in ReStream was written "Cinecraft........."
You can use this utility to find any strings of a user specified minimum length in any binary file.

@frippy
Unless something has recently changed, as far as I know, ReStream only accepts demultiplexed MPEG-2 videostreams as input...

Imho there is no problems to demux VOB file to MPEG2+audio :)
