View Full Version : AVCHD@15mbit VS MPEG2@30mbit

I'm going to buy an hd camera but i'm dubious if buy an avchd or not.

We all know the high potential and efficiency of AVC compared to the old mpeg2. It is so efficient that it is able to give the same quality of mpeg2 but with a very lower bitrate.

The problems of the post editing should be solved within very short time: for example the next week will be possibile to buy pinnacle studio 11 that has fully support for avchd and so on for others famous editing sw...(as you can learn from the avchd main site).

My choose is between sony hdr-SR1E and the panasonic HDC-SD1.
i can find the sony at about 1300 eur and pana at 1000 eur...
i should prefer pana, not only for the price but also for the 12x zoom , the presence o 3ccd that i prefer to the cmos and also for the SD storage, that i prefer to Hard disk storage (since that if the hdsik should be broken, it would be more expensive to change etc etc..)

But i recently seen the last JVC: the GZ-HD7 Everio FullHD HDV.
But it's very expensive...about 1600 eur...
This camera is very interesting beacuse it's able to acquire at 1920x1080 at 30mbit mpeg2....very very interesting doesn'it (since the medium of the actual consumer hdv camera is between 18 and 24 mbit mpeg2) ?

The above before mentioned avchd cameras is able to acquire at 15mbit AVC.

The interesting thing is that the considered JVC as an advanced Fujinon Optics compared to the Zeiss and Leica (both very nice) optics of sony and pana respectively. But i suspect that the Fujinon in the considered jvc could be do the difference.

Almost all consumer HDV only record at 1440x1080 but the newly JVC HD7 and Panasonic SD3(SD1 is at 1440x1080) both can do 1920x1080.

The HDV MPEG2@1440x1080 is 25Mbit while the MPEG2@1920x1080 is 30Mbit because the resolution is getting higher and it needs more bitrate to maintain the same quality level. The case in SD3(AVCHD) is similar. If you do 1920x1080 record, it will spend out more storage space.

I would go for one CCD/CMOS and MPEG2 solution. Consumer 3CCD HDV like HD7/SD1/SD3 usually only have three CCD with really really low pixel count(don't catch up 1440x1080, still far away) because of the cost. They involved with some interpolation to scale it up to 1920/1440x1080.

On the other hand, one CCD/CMOS machine it uses only one chip so they have the budget to give you a large pixel CCD/CMOS to truely meet the HDV resolution standard. No doubt that 3CCD/CMOS will give you better colour reproduction because they don't have to use RGB Bayer pattern like in the single CCD/CMOS machine but the native resolution they output is just too low.

I don't think any portable device on Earth got the enough CPU power and battery life to do H264 High profile real-time encode@1920/1440x1080 at the moment. They should only use Main or possibily only at Baseline profile. Moreover, MPEG2 is more editable. AVC@1920/1440x1080 is just too slow to editing even on a modern system.

But I'm not going to say HD7/SD1/SD3 very bad. I believe that they at least outperformed all DV machines.

hi dear!! :D

that review persuaded me that jvc hd7 is really nice only in the paper...and its cost is really unjustified...

and finally i found the wolfgang blog with many intersting clip that conviced me that the best consumer camera today are canon hv20 and pana sd1.

and there are other intersting comparison, where, as you can notice, che "common" camera used as comparison, is hc3...

at the end i bought sd1...i'm preparing a small review... ;)
